Just purchased another 970 Evo Plus(1TB) manufacture date 2021 July. My other two Evo Pluses(both 1TB) are 2020 October. On the newer drive the firmware was updated via magician to 4BQEXM7,which suggests that it has the Epis controller. But according to AIDA64 It has a Phoenix controller the same as the the other two. There are two notable differences according to AIDA64 in that the newer version under sanitize operations has Block Erase and Crypto erase supported. Performance wise I see no difference between the other two. I don't do bench tests it doesn't relate to every day use.

Just a bit of information, cos I had nothing better to do.

As far as a typical User experience is concerned faster and faster SSD's won't make any discernable difference. However what you should get are larger capacity drives at cheaper prices and probably more reliable too -- although I've never had even an old SSD failing on me yet and some are quite old.

Unlike HDD's where the newer bigger capacity drives with larger cache sizes and 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM where improvement was immediate (and any SSD was a big improvement on those) don't expect the user experience to change much if at all by switching to faster SSD's, Better Video and more RAM will help as well as faster CPU's.

Cheers

@jimbo45 Haven't had a spinner for years, all my PC have been solid state, My oldest SSd is a Samsung 850 PRO with power on time of 1355 days and 21 tbw, still only showing 1% usage. So 99% life remaining give or take controller failure.

I have 2 x SSD's one is supposedly faster than the other but you cannot tell the difference, both are like lightning compared to the old spinner

I also have 970 Evo Plus 1TB. You have chosen wise my friend.

Can you tell me from where can I check which controller is mine? (to see whether Epis or Phoenix) I searched around AIDA but I cannot see it anywhere

The Phoenix controlled 970 has a firmware version 2B2QEXM7, where as the Elips controller had a firmware update to 4BQEXM7. Aida64 incorrectly detects the wrong controller and reports the Eplis as Phoenix. I have razed this issue with the makers of AIDA64 and was told this will be rectified in their next Beta build. If you use Samsung Magician and check for updates and nothing happens then you have the original 970.

Agree. And I'm no more concerned about SSD/NVMe drive failures and premature wear than I was with HDD drives. The empirical evidence simply hasn't proved that to be a need for concern :)

Anyway, I've got two Samsung 970's in my system one 512gig (OS) the other 1TB (Photography). Also have 3 SATA Samsung drives 950 to 960 EVO drives ranging from 1TB to 2TB.
