If you check ALL the specs, the MTBF and the warranties, you'll see the difference.
There was also another major difference, but I don't remember what it was.
Something about the IC chips used in the Pro and the EVO models.
Or maybe something different about the controllers?

Read/ write speeds being near equal of each other made the 970 evo+ close to the pro version just a bit cheaper
But back when these were new the prices were completely crazy pretty much why I ended up with only 500gb

Also got a regular 970 evo 500gb it's write speed is lower than the evo + but reads are same.

You'd logically expect that the 980 PRO would necessarily always be more expensive than its 970 EVO Plus counterpart. But in actual reality you might find the exact opposite, more often than many think. A few months ago the 1TB 980 PRO with heatsink was just $70 USD on amazon (sold by amazon and shipped by amazon, that is). You just got to wait for the right discount is all. It might take a little bit of patience... kind of like ice fishing. lol AFAIK many people in the US still prefer amazon over newegg/etc. because amazon typically offers smooth returns and refunds, like, after an item is DoA (Dead on Arrival) or has some other problem.

Now they are going up and by a lot.
Just my sn850x 4tb I bought two for 230.us a pop before black friday now listed at 310.us.

Since I'm just replacing a backup drive that has to write 16-20GB files once or twice a day, and the speed differences between the fastest and the slowest current NVMe drives is negligible in real time for me for that write (I mean we're talking the difference between, say, eight seconds and six seconds for the process), I think I'll be watching my pocketbook more closely than my stopwatch for this purchase.

That's a very good point. People (myself included) can get really wrapped up in technical details.

I have my WD drives because I found some good deals. Stuck with them because they work well. Will consider other brands for my next purchase.

There are other advantages besides the faster speed, and, the 1TB 980 PRO w/ heatsink at $110 USD on amazon right now costs the same as the total price of the 1TB 970 EVO Plus and a separate heatsink that sells for, say, $12 USD. That's why I said what I said re "not much point left in still buying an unused 970 EVO Plus anymore now".

980 pro well I've showed what it will do temp wise and that was on a 2tb as a os drive.
But keep in mind the heatsink on it is a very very basic cheap one so sammy must of used decent pads
I used it briefly on my laptop where air isn't all that great and the temps were hotter.

Heatsinks wise thermal pads are the maker or breaker of one.
Frankly even arctic pads are good enough and inexpensive.

I think he's just making the comparison. I've already replaced two Samsung 970 EVO Plusses with two WDs, and I'm thinking of doing that on the other PC. These things aren't exactly cheap, though, so I have to watch my bank balance.

Yeah, really good-looking pads came with the Sabrent sinks I bought. The two M.2s I'm running the OS and my main storage on -- the left two in my latest shots above (see #49) -- are in Sabrent sinks with Sabrent-supplied pads.

I already had a couple of the Sabrent heatsinks, but went with this for a Crucial T700.

A crazy solution for a crazy problem. (Works well, if you have a place to use it that has OK airflow.)

There are M.2 2280 coolers that incorporate a small fan, if you're desperate.

I think you may have missed the posts above where I pointed out that I'm working inside two SmallFormFactor (SFF) cases, and there are no case fans, just the CPU fan and the PSU-internal fan. I chose to work with these cases because I really like almost everything about them, but their capacity for cooling disks or accommodating fans is not one of them.

Sorry. I forgot to say thank you for that fascinating post. I only wish I could use an ugly monster like that. It would solve all my temps problems. It IS a beast, isn't it?

I was just trying to point out that, yes, it very often does make sense to want to replace an old 970 EVO Plus with something better. Especially when this "something" costs the same (or less... if you have patience and you also know how to continuously monitor the prices), it does. Even so, as long as the old 970 EVO Plus in question has still more than just a bit of life expectancy in it, it will still continue to be usable nevertheless. So, that could be a valid reason to not want to replace it just yet. Especially in light of the fact that current SSD prices have gone up, it could. The 970 EVO Plus is still decent enough to not have to worry. Don't panic, and, always carry a towel.

To clarify on this, I was referring to the temperature in situations where the (sustained sequential) data transfer speed of the 980 PRO will be kept the same (or almost) as that of the 970 EVO Plus, e.g., by putting the 980 PRO in a socket that is limited to PCIe 3.0 speed as opposed to running the 980 PRO at PCIe 4.0 speed. I mean, the 970 EVO Plus is only a PCIe 3.0 SSD. So, comparing the temperature of the 970 EVO Plus running at PCIe 3.0 speed to that of the 980 PRO running at PCIe 4.0 speed would be like apples and oranges.

The 980 PRO w/ heatsink does not run overly hot in an average desktop PC with decent airflow. In a typical laptop the SSD compartment doesn't provide enough clearance so as a result the 980 PRO w/ heatsink simply doesn't fit or if it does, the heatsink of the 980 PRO w/ heatsink takes up so much space that there's not enough clearance left over thereby causing airflow to be restricted too severely on this same heatsink.

Some recommend to use thermal pads from a brand called Thermal Grizzly. But these are still rather expensive pads. On my 2TB 980 PRO that I have inside my laptop I don't have a heatsink so I don't use any pads. Whatever you do, do NOT pull the graphene sticker off of the SSD. For me, the 980 PRO with no heatsink is sufficient. There is sufficient airflow for what I do.
