I still see plenty of 4TB SATA SSD models on Amazon, including the 870 EVO. However, Samsung has priced that one in the stratosphere at twice the price of other brands like Crucial or SP Silicon Power.

Samsung 870 EVO are high-end SATA SSDs, SP and Crucial are not. For one thing, Samsung are DRAM SSDs, which may explain at least partially why the prices have gone up.

Yes, but for the very purpose that the article mentioned in the first post, the difference in transfer speeds probably aren't worth double the price. I have a TEAM T2532TB as one of my backup drives, it's worked just fine for that purpose.

Every SATA SSD I am aware of has nonvolatile memory, when you power it off and move it to a new system, for example, the contents are preserved.

So explain to me how a DRAM based SSD retains its contents when the power is removed...

Maybe you are just thinking of the small SDRAM/DRAM volatile cache which is common on many high end drives, SSD and HDD.

Yes. It´s not very common. A 2 TB 870 EVO has 2 GB LPDDR4 DRAM. The non volatile is the NAND Flash memory.

The DRAM cache is used as a buffer when it transferring data. The actual data is stored in non-volatile NAND Flash Memory.

Many SSDs today are fast enough that they work without DRAM Cache. For example:

My main desktop has two M.2 NVME SSDs
Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2 TB | DRAM Cache: None | Host-Memory-Buffer (HMB): 64 MB
Samsung 990 Evo Plus 4 TB | DRAM Cache: None | Host-Memory-Buffer (HMB): 64 MB

SSDs like the Samsung 990 Evo Plus uses system RAM (HMB) for buffering data during transfer.
