Seagate HD

If you see 256mb cache suspect an smr disk so always check.

I got one a few years ago without realising because they weren't telling you back then. I wouldn't get another

Why Seagate BarraCuda has the most likes from newsegg and Amazon if it’s not that good?
Why assume newsegg and/or Amazon are reliable/authoritative sources for ratings?

8 TB IronWolf is less than an 8TB Barracuda Pro on Amazon right now (the .Barracuda Pro is $160 vs $150 for the Ironwolf)
On Amazon.com, the refurbished 12TB Barracuda Pro is $104 whereas the refurbished 12TB Ironwolf is $120.
What do you mean by overkill? TBW/yr? A difference I might expect between a NAS drive and a desktop targeted drive is the sound level, I have Ironwolf but no Barracuda Pro, but I imagine the Pro might be a little quieter.
All of them are overkill for what the OP asked, as he doesn't need a drive that is designed for always-on (24/7) workloads. Despite this, the refurbished 12TB Barracuda Pro (ST12000DM0007) at $104 would be a great choice IMO.
  • 250MB/s Max. Sustained Transfer Rate OD (Outer Disk tracks) is fast for a typical HDD, it's a tad faster than the 8TB version of it actually
  • 12TB is more future proof than 8TB
  • 8TB is more expensive than 12TB, not just in terms of price per TB, but in terms of the actual price of the drive itself right now.
The WDC Black 8TB, and all capacity for that matter, are ridiculously high in price right now. I don't know why, I hadn't looked at them in quite a while.

I hadn't had a Barracuda in a long time because they had pretty bad reliability problems in the past. A high percentage of 1 star reviews I have seen on Amazon for the pro version has stopped me from going that path.
Every brand makes good drives and bad drives. By the time the blogs about useful statistics from Backblaze can start to indicate to some reasonable degree which drives turned out to be among more reliable ones in the specific category that you were aiming for, the drive models in question already have become so heavily outdated that buying them new no longer makes that much economical sense (if any). AFAIK the only HDD model from Seagate that had an abnormally high failure rate was the 3TB Barracuda ST3000DM001. Dissecting 3TB Hard Drive Failure Rates

To me, personally, having say, 8 percent annual failure rate versus only 3 percent would be completely acceptable if this 5 percent lower failure rate comes at the sacrifice of 65MB/s slower Max. Sustained Transfer Rate OD in addition to the sacrifice of paying a substantial price premium. In part, that's because online consumer ratings and online consumer reviews tend to be generally more biased than specs. But the more dominant factor is that the money is better spent towards buying more numerous drives as opposed to buying the kind of drives that might or might not be 5 percent more reliable and, beyond the shadow of a doubt, are significantly more expensive in addition to that.
For me my HDDs exist in external hot-swappable 5 drive enclosure that doesn't get turned on unless I need one. I don't like the sound of HDD.
