Seeking Solutions for UserProfiles Error in Windows Upgrade

Hi all,
I'm struggeling with upgrading from Windows 11 21H2 to 22H2.
My UserProfiles were moved to Drive D: with an unattended installation when I installed 21H2. Everything worked like a charm. I used quite the same unattended file linke I did for Win7 and Win10. And there I never had any problems with upgrades.
But now I get a 0x80070020 - 0x2000A ... SAFE_OS phase ... PREPARE_FIRST_BOOT error.

I then started to search and got the hint to move back my UserProfiles to C:
(Yes it worked at the end, but I was not happy with it)

I started with a clean installation and a unatteded File according to @Kari 's instruction in tenforums.com. But when I tried to upgrade to 22H2 - the same issue.
Then I tried the Sysprep method from that post - with an another attempt. Same issue.

Has MS changed the behaviour?
Yes, I know, they were not happy with "Moving UserProfile" dirs - even in Win7. But till now it worked, and it still does - as long as you do no upgrades.

Had anyone else had this issue so far? Or probably a solution (without moving back the UserProfiles manually to C: and after the upgrade to D:)?
Probably @Kari can have any experience or ideas with this?

What had you seen troubleshooting log files?

A common troubleshooting step for 0x80070020 is clean boot.

0x80070020

The existing process can't access the file because it's being used by another process.

Use the MSCONFIG tool to perform a clean boot on the machine and then try to perform the update again. For more information, see How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

Thanks for the response.
I already tried clean boot, doing the upgrade from within win11, from a boot stick and with an in-place upgrade. I did also a some SFC and DISM sessions and repair attempts for the Update process.

It seems that the last setup process was not abel to copy access files on drive E: - but I have no drive e: in my PC ?
In other forums it was stated that this error also appears when you move the Userprofile folders.

Hi again,

sorry took some time now.
I did a clean install from an 21H1 USB Stick with an unattended.xml file to move the profiles folders to Drive D:/
Then I did the 1st bsod session and saved it here (inkl. the used unattended.xml file)

Win11 21H2 unattended install.zip

Then I copied the 22H2 ISO to the machine and started an inplace-upgrade - with the expected result to get the error.
After that I did the next bsod session and saved the results:

The logs were in a foreign language and could not be scanned.

There were scannow problems before and after.

Windows was not activated: 0xC004F034
(The Software Licensing Service reported that the license not found or was invalid)

The event viewer displayed almost all entries with: N/A

These errors occur during partition analysis and validation, and can be caused by the presence of multiple system partitions. For example, if you installed a new system drive but left the previous system drive connected, this can cause a conflict. To resolve the errors, disconnect or temporarily disable drives that contain the unused system partition. You can reconnect the drive after the upgrade has completed. Alternatively, you can delete the unused system partition.

The requested system device can't be found, there's a sharing violation, or there are multiple devices matching the identification criteria.

See if detaching all non-Windows disk drives during the next upgrade attempt creates a new error code or message.

Hi again,

I now did the whole procedure again with an englisch version, so you can scann the logs in english.
Appart from the DVD-RAM Drive I also disconnected all HDD/sSDDs - appart from the two needed NVMEs .

Again first the logs from the clean install

The earlier log displayed invalid license and the current log displayed volume activation.

I do not see any misbehavior in regards of rule #4:
As it is a test system i used the default installation keys for Win11 Pro and as this was a remark the last time I used one of my several VL Keys that were leagaly bought directly at Microsoft. If necessary I can send you a screenshot from my license overview of the VL Admin Screen.
