If working in a program its menu Toolbar usually has File with some choices, pick Save as and will get a chance to specify the drive and/or folder to save it in.

Find the file on your computer (see in Documents, Pictures, Download etc). Click on it and press CTRL+C (copy). Open your external drive and target folder, press CTRL+V (paste). That's it. You can also right-click on the file (press the right mouse button) to see a list. Select Copy to mark the file for copy. Go at target folder, right-click in a white space between the icons she select Paste from the list to complete the copy process. I know it is very simple. Imagine my frustration in Windows 95 when this method first appeared when there wasn't the familiar File Manager utility from Windows 3.1 and I could not guess how to copy files! I used the command prompt to copy files with DOS! Been there done that.

You mean this? Even the mouse has progressed. I recall back then with an engineering firm designing things like bridges and roads did use a 3-button mouse, middle was for locking a point before starting a new line.

A program/app used to perform some kind of work generally lets you choose the location where you want to save your work. This can be done via the Save As dialog window that you normally can access from the File menu of the program/app in question, the default keyboard shortcut for this is Ctrl + Shift + S. You should be able to navigate to the desired storage volume (drive letter) from there. If the Save As option is not supported, you should still be able to copy the file(s) or an entire folder from one location to another by using File Explorer. That is, assuming you know the source location (where the data is stored), and what destination it needs to be copied to.

Today's mouse has a middle button, the wheel. You can configure pressing the wheel to do some custom action. The default action is to go in "scroll mode" and scroll the whole screen rather than 3-4 lines at a time. So today's mice are three-button mice too. Gotcha!

Today's mouse has a middle button,
This is really nothing new. As a matter of fact, I already had a 3-button mouse on my PC all the way back in 1989. This one:

Only difference on my '92 computer was it used the 9-pin Comm port instead of the 25-pin port then with later versions the plug morphed into the PS/2 then to USB.

I was until recently using a PS/2 mouse to avoid taking one of my few USB ports. My keyboard is still PS/2. Unfortunately my mouse wheel was damaged (after several times I dropped it) and now I use a USB mouse.

Hate when things break, I have an old whitish Toshiba Laptop, from before the name Notebook became used, that had a clipon rollerball that fell apart on me, now keep a PS/2 mouse for it. Has MS-DOS 5 and Win3.1 still working, still have the Win3.11 and WFW floppies, might upgrade when too bored with other things..

See if you can install Windows 95 or 98. There is a kernel patch called kernel9x that allows Windows 98 to use applications intended for Windows XP! I did that on an old laptop once. Very slow but much better than running Windows 3.1 or MS DOS.
