Services in 22H2

Found this out the hard way. Pre 22H2 you were able to disable the service:

Network List Service

However, if you do it now, your Explorer.exe crashes and relaunches rapidly over and over.

A couple of other services that I do not disable: (note: I have not tested them in 22H2 but they crashed the Explorer.exe or made Office not work in previous versions so I do not do it now)

Kinda reminds me of the old Black Viper series that ended in 2018 or so. For a long run, he helped lots of people, amused lots of people, and made lots of people groan when they discovered that their computers no longer did what they wanted them to do.

Thank you for sharing your list. I just hope that only experienced and knowledgeable computer users will disable everything on that list. At least they will know that they need a fresh image handy if they're going to go into Services with a chainsaw and go to work.

I would say if your looking for a completely stripped version of Windows then install a super lite mod like..
WINDOWS 11 GHOST SPECTRE 22H2 | SUPER LITE or something similar. That man knows his stuff and his versions work great.

Why oh why would you do that? Most of those services are needed for the modern Windows experience. If you want to have nothing on your screen just boot into Safe mode with CMD.

Lean and mean is one thing, but I'm of the mind that if one wants Windows to function correctly disabling a bunch of core services is NOT the way to go. But that's just me. The yellow brick road doesn't end in the land of XP any more.

I agree. Some stuff is bloat, but don't disable half of the system. Kinda reminds me of those YouTube videos Deleting Windows files until it stops working.

What makes them core services? I don't care about diag info because if there is a problem I will reinstall. I don't care about BT because I don't use BT devices. I don't care about Xbox because none of the games are through Xbox. I don't care about printing services because it's 2023. I don't need Windows Search because I know where everything I install and use is.

I guess I am missing where or how this is breaking my core Windows experience.

If it suits you and the way you use your computer, that's great. It's your computer so you can do what you want with it. But more inexperienced folks who use their system differently will read this post. Any one of these listed services could break a function of their system that they use and they would be chasing their tails to find what broke it. Some services are dependent on others

Well if they are 'experienced' as you say, they can go through them one by one as I did and test them one at a time and see if it hinders their function. The whole purpose of this section is to customize Windows 11. My personalization is not going to be your personalization, as you alluded to. With that, I am confused why you would hijack a thread stating 'experienced' users won't even consider doing this. Like, I posted a question that no one contributed to yet... Crazy...

I see far too many useful services in that list that I would never disable.

How in the world would I be able to troubleshoot a problem with almost everything disabled?

Further, we have to be careful . . . there are many, many newbies who come in here looking for help. Most of 'em don't have a clue that we're not all gurus who know everything there is to know . . . I'm one of those non-gurus. Thank goodness I know enough to not take everything posted here as gospel.

They do not consume a lot of resources and have little impact on performance.
A new operating system is required, but it is not that easy.

Yep, all of @z3r010's sites have such a great reputation that the newbies who make it here think we're all top gun gurus! And not all of us are. I know what I'm doing, but not so much that I don't check and recheck any advice I give.

Apparently you don't want your PC to be able to see other PCs on the network, or to be able to be seen by them.

If you can't turn on Network Discovery, check to make sure the services below are enabled, set to automatic (startup type), and running (status).

Hijacking a thread is going off in a totally different direction than the Original Post.

@glasskuter definitely kept to the subject at hand, although her ideas don't conform completely to yours. I would call her input giving cautionary information rather than hijacking.

Eh, maybe I misread. But the rest of my point stands. None of you are on topic atm. There are real benefits to disabling services and you're all saying just don't ever do it. If you wanted to actually contribute you should comment about why not to enable or disable service A B C because of reason X Y Z. Instead you say to use a 3rd party version of Windows that is supposedly trusted and still within EULA & ToS.

Nah, I don't care about that. I use OneDrive through my web browsers email. Also, I only have my school computer and my main PC. And I am done with my masters now so it just mines Doge because I dont know what else to do with it. Lol.

It's not as important as you think.
There are no easy ways to improve your computer.
Disable something, like Bluetooth. No problem.
I once even compiled Linux for my computer (march=native) with optimization flags, it did not get better.

It is better to disable something in the bios/uefi.

For example.
I only use Bluetooth Audio.
Disable in the bios/uefi Realtek Audio, no services and drivers in Windows.

I'm very sorry you see it that way as it was not meant as such. Please accept my apology as no offense was intended. As Wynona and Bree stated, out of all the active members here, only a few are true gurus. The rest of us are Windows enthusiasts who attempt to steer folks in trouble in the right direction if we can or just to answer questions to the best of our knowledge. None of us are infallible. We do not always agree with each other here, but most do not take it personal because we all share a common goal.

Each day thousands of people come to this forum seeking information, many who are newbies who know little about windows 11 at all. They can easily be led astray if we aren't careful. The majority of them are not members so they never make a post. (As I write this 730 people are browsing this forum. Only 39 are members). I can only speak for myself but I feel a personal obligation to point out anything I feel could cause problems for the readers. That was my sole intent.

And to answer your question, I have not manually disabled any windows services, though there are a few Windows has disabled. For the way my system is equipped, it has little impact on my resources.
