before even considering upgrading your going to have to look and see if your computer will support SSE4.2 instruction set (and the POPCNT instruction). . since this is hard written code. Even rufus will not by pass this ms mandate. if you cant update to 11 . There is another choice to consider move toWindows 10 IoT Enterprise 21h2 as it has updates till 2032. heck i know people that still use windows 7 and connect to the interweb as my gradma cause it lol. my desktop is older than dirt and i moved to windows 11by using rufus and am using windows insider program . And i still get all the updates like security and cu's not really sure if i get the feature up dates. simply because the computer stays on 24/7 .

I usually do a reboot once a week and if any updates are needed there installed without me knowing . and weekley i shut it down over night to clear out stuff.

no i just dont download fishy files and i am not paranoid american i did same on win 10 for 2-3 years before that so i would hardly call that luck

That is a good point, but I assume we are talking about upgrading the W10 PC in @onionat's specifications. That has a 7th generation Intel Core i7-7700, all Intel Core i3/i3/i7 had SSE4.2 from the 1st generation onwards.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Read a lot of rubbish here. Just upgrade if your system can handle it, don't if it can't. There is no adverse affect from not upgrading, other than being left behind. As long as you're aware of the risks..

If your machine has the SSE4.2 instruction set then I would go for it. IMHO Windows 11 just runs better and is more user friendly. We've upgraded a lot of PC's that are 'unsupported' and generally there are no problems.
