Since Starlink was set up today I have average 80 to 160 download and 20 to 90 upload speeds (but also average 50 ping).

Prior to that I had approx 2.4mbps download and 1mbps upload.

They are great speeds but the ping is enough to drive me away.

Ah right - that is what I’m concerned about. Stepson will be here today and if he says it’s rubbish then looks like no point keeping it.

He’d be left with a choice of good speeds and higher ping. Or low ping and virtually unusable speeds. 2mbs for gaming. Which would you choose?

The upload speeds are also massively better so that would make his life easier.

50ms isn't that bad for satellite.
Now if you get a ping like this... then you have problems...

That was from a friend in the U.S. Army, stationed in the middle east. They had rigged up this Rube Goldberg setup, just to get online to play Diablo II. It was pretty hilarious when they logged on with that ping.

Lol - that really is bad ping! Good news - Stepson is wowed by the speeds and doesn't care about 50 ish ping. His game download took 15 minutes instead of the usual 2 days!

I live in a rural location and had been struggling on with 3mb up and 1mp down. And regular crashes. Have a look at Starlink! Works great for us. 160 down and about 11 up now. But costs about double BT cost.

Cable: 800Mbps download / 20Mbps upload (asymmetric)
Fiber: 800Mbps download / 800Mbps upload (symmetric)

My total bill is $112/month for internet through Comcast.
and thx to the ACP discount (USA gov's affordable connectivity ACT) I only pay $82/month
for 1000Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload speed...

I was confused by how high your upload speed was compared to your download. You had Download 236.31 | Upload 806.57. I have never seen anyone with such a high upload compared to download. So what Internet tier do you have? Do you have 300/300 Fiber?

I have 1200/35 Mbps through a cable provider. With my desktops I get about 940/40 Mbps. My download speed might be a little higher but it is capped by motherboards which only have 1000 Mbps Ethernet ports. My laptop WiFi speeds are actually limited by their hardware. My old laptop only supports 802.11 ac WiFi. It typically gets about 350/40 (5GHz band). My new laptop has 802.11 ax WiFi. It typically gets about 850/40 (5GHz band). Note this is not much less that my Ethernet speeds.

I have 4 choices for Internet service. Two are traditional cable providers while the other two are fiber. I am still using one of the cable providers only because it still has the traditional TV service. The two fiber Internet providers stopped offering traditional TV and only offer streaming TV via the Internet. My wife likes the traditional cable TV so Fiber is not an option.

You said you have FTTN Fiber. Both of the Fiber providers I have acccess to are at least FTTC because they have Fiber on the utility poles outside my home. What I don't know is how they would connect to my home from there. It could be Fiber, copper cable or some combination of both.
