Show off your internet speed!

Well, I got 900 mbps fibre installed and the ethernet speed was fine at 925 mbps up/down.

However wifi was much lower at 400 mbps up/down.

I checked all my cables were cat 6 or above.

No matter what settings I changed, I could not improve the wifi.

The wifi router I have only has two bands 2.4 GHZ and 5 GHZ and in the end, my specs indicated they are good for 866 mbps but I could not get that no matter what. I bought a cheapish wifi 6 router and daisy chained it to main router by ethernet lan to lan, disabled dhcp on new router, gave new router a static ip address, and Boom - over 800 mbps up/down. I then disabled wifi on main router and all is fine.

I guess I will never get the full 900 mbps with wifi as it always carries a bit of wifi performance overhead, but 800 mbps is pretty damn good. for a domestic consumer.

My provider supplied an AIO device - ROuter, Wi-Fi, authent (as they claim) and more. It's Wi-Fi is horrendous, too, and I quickly bought my own APs and disabled the on-board Wi-Fi.

Never looked back.

That’s pretty decent for Aust. Congrats. (y)

P.S. I’ve never heard of x integration in QLD. I wonder if they do the GC? I’m with Aussie, which for internet, they are great. For mobile, avoid like the plague, their plans are a scam.

Sure would. I seen x integration under the “Rate Your provider” I haven’t heard of Leaptel either. Not that I look for any other providers.

Sadly, we don't have this yet, even when Springfield, Vermont-based VTel, is a local ISP that specializes in FTTH to the masses. I've had FTTH from them since November 26, 2013. I've had excellent experiences with VTel.

So still at 1 Gb down and 1 Gb up, but I gave a packet test just a bit ago:

We had Comcast business 300 down/ 100 up for $300 a month and they refused to work with us on price. Latency went down too with this speed.

$100 a month, spendy yes but worth it
I pay a 3rd of that for roughly 1/3rd of speed, but it really is law of diminishing returns,

I can download a 5GB iso in just over 40 seconds (,big improvement over 40 minutes it use to take for almost as much cost).

I really am not prepared to pay 3 times as much to get that down to say 15 seconds.

My experience is many websites now become the bottleneck i.e. they cannot serve the files as fast as you can download.

I went from Comcast with 1200/35 for about $113 a month to AT&T Fiber 2/2 G for $110 monthly. Do I need 2g symmetrical....heck no. Plus the added costs of having to upgrade from 1G switches to multi-gig switches...which aren't cheap. Some time after I went with AT&T they've decided to increase their price on 2g and 5g internet. 2g will be/or is now $130 a month. But so far mine has not increased but when it does I'll probably drop back down to 1g/1g fiber. At some point it's just not worth it.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.

I'm thinking that it shouldn't even be as much of a problem, as motherboards regularly have 2 Gb ethernet controllers now.

Heck, even socket 775 has 1 Gb ethernet controllers.

Ironically, I don't even know if I can get the 2 Gb plan for less than 4-hundy-per-month!
