Is there a way to auto-launch the Snipping tool after i have made my snipping?

For example, if i press Win+Shift+S i can easily make a snipping and when done a notification pops out down left and nothing more happens. If i click the notification the Snipping tool opens. I want the Snipping tool to auto-launch every time.

It´s not a big deal to click once on the notification, but using the tool several times a day makes it annoying. And, when the notification dissapear from down left it seems to be no way to get it back. (Yes, i can change the "Dismiss notifications after this amount of time" to make it last longer...)

Anyone? :)

AFAIK the snip is stored in the clipboard and ready for pasting into other programs, email etc, so why would you need the snip tool popping up?
However, if you still need the tool to come up, you might just assign a keyboard shortcut?

Yes, the snip is indeed stored in the clipboard but sometimes (often) i want to add a green or red dot and/or simply save the snip, all without the need of a third party app. It would be convinient if the Snipping tool opened directly.

Plus, if i make a snip and then use the keyboard shortcut to open the Snipping tool the snip i just made is not automagically carried over to the Snipping tool i just opened.

I can of course start everything by starting the Snipping tool to start with, but if i then want to take a snip of an app with a active window that windows become un-active when creating the snip. This was not the case in Win 10, the windows in the other app kept it´s window active. For many snips i do those windows must be active to show clearer what i mean.

It's still there in Notifications for you to click on, even after the unread notification count has disappeared. Just click on the clock/date to see it.

Thank you for the welcome! :)

If i make a snip and ignore the notification and then when it has disappeared click on the clock i only get the calendar. I have un-checked "Show a summary of what i missed..." in the Focus assist, but if i check it still only see the calendar.

If you let it disappear of its own accord then it remains in the notifications for later use.

Open the snipping tool from the start list then expand 'more' then 'settings'.

O.k, so if i did that, is there a way to restore it to default behaviour? :)

Open the snipping tool from the start list then expand 'more' then 'settings'.

In settings expand the window downwards . The setting here is for saving snips only and disabled saving to clipboard. You can change to your own preference.

But the Save snips setting is for how Snipping tool should behave when one close it.

  • If it´s On, Snipping tool will give me the option to save it as a file each time one close the Snipping tool with let´s say Alt+F4.
  • If it´s Off, Snipping tool will close without giving the user an option to save it as a file each time one close the Snipping tool with let´s say Alt+F4.
IOW, On will give me "Save", "Don´t save" and "Cancel" pop-up when i close the Snipping tool.

This setting has nothing to do with the Notification behaviour. :)

I have the behavior exactly as you want (with the minor caveat being that the Snipping tool stays minimized, but it is there on my taskbar after I make a snip).

But I open the app to do so. I never use the Windows shortcut.

If I use the shortcut it goes to the clipboard. If I start the Snipping tool it saves it to the snipping tool.

Assuming what we're discussing here is the use of Snipe and Snitch/Slapping Tool for images, I use the Win Shift S hotkey to launch, either click the window I want (in that setting) or draw the rectangle I want (in that setting) and when I let go, it's in the c-board. Then open my image editing program (IrfanView) and hit Ctrl V, and it's there, and then Save. Done. It's in the folder I chose, in the graphics format I chose, and it's ready for use.

Assuming what we're discussing here is the use of Snipe and Snitch/Slapping Tool for images

Not really, the topic is about if there is a way to take a snip using Win+Shift+S and when done taking the snip having the Snipping tool app automagically open up instead of having to click on the notification for it to open.

No. It only works if you use the app.

Yup. For whatever reason (I suppose because by default Print Screen uses the clipboard even if not tied to the Snipping Tool), the use of the short cut key for Snipping Tool ties it in with the normal Windows function of sending output from Print Screen to the clipboard. And using Win + SHIFT + S makes it behave the same - you get opened directly to the snipping part, but it only saves to clipboard, and you then have to click it to have it open in the app to mark up and save.

The old Snipping Tool was a manually installed app, and you could set a separate shortcut key for it in order to launch it. The only way to do that now is to open shell:AppsFolder via the Run dialog, then right click snipping tool and select create shortcut, which it will only create on the desktop, and then open properties and set up a different shortcut key.

But this only opens the app, it does not automatically start the snipping process.

So, either way, there is a flaw, per se - via shortcut, you get to snip directly, but it saves only to clipboard. By app, you have the clip imported directly to the app, but you have to manually select the New button to start the clip snipping process.

But this only opens the app, it does not automatically start the snipping process.

That´s not actually a problem for me. The main problem is that the Snipping tool (ST) in Windows 11 behaves a tad different than it did in Windows 10.

For example:
When i want to take a snip of the Export Settings in Adobe Premiere Pro with the intention to keep the blue border around the name of the Preset used i could in Win 10 simply launch the ST and press Ctrl+N and take the snip and getting the result i want. (See image)

If i do the same thing in Win 11, iow launch the ST and press Ctrl+N the Export Settings in Adobe Premiere Pro becomes "unactive" and the blue border is gone. The ST in Win 11 "takes over" the focus from all other open apps. This was not the case in Win 10.

This happens with other apps as well, so it not an issue with Adobe Premiere Pro.

This can be worked around in Win 11 by using the Win+Shift+S shortcut or if one set the Print Screen button to take a snip. That´s positive, but it forces me to manually click the Notification to open the snip each time in the ST.

That´s the issue behind my hope to find a way to automagically launch ST once i have made the snip. :)

That is what the timer is for. That is how you can interact with a window / program / app (including getting context menues) before the screenshot interface comes up.

The old snipping tool also had a timer, but it was not necessary for what you are trying to use, only for things like context menu, but the new one, being a Windows store app, does seem to be more aggressive in trying to capture interactions, as you've noticed, so the timer feature comes in quite handy for that.

That is what the timer is for. That is how you can interact with a window / program / app (including getting context menues) before the screenshot interface comes up.

That´s how i used it to start with in Win 11 to work around it but it was/is more steps included than using either Win+Shift+S or setting the PrintScreen button to take a snip.

Hopefully a future update will take care of it. Until then i have to adjust to the new behaviour. :)

AFAIK the snip is stored in the clipboard and ready for pasting into other programs, email etc, so why would you need the snip tool popping up?
However, if you still need the tool to come up, you might just assign a keyboard shortcut?
What do you think of the windows built in clipboard? Would it be better to install a third party clipboard app or no? I use Snagit 2022 for my screenshots etc and love it, works perfect for me but i was just curious about the clipboard.
