Weird question, or maybe not!

I don't game, so the onboard Intel graphics 630 is more than enough for me.

But, there is an app I want to use, Whisper, to create subtitles for videos, that runs off of the GPU. I'm half deaf, so this would be a lifesaver program for videos that don't already have subtitles.

So, is there some sort of software emulator, that can fake being a dedicated GPU so this program will work?

The app is GitHub - Const-me/Whisper: High-performance GPGPU inference of OpenAI's Whisper automatic speech recognition (ASR) model

I have 16 GB of DDR 4 and a 512GB SSD "C" drive, if that helps!

Thanks for any suggestions!

according to the link your onboard GPU should be able to run this software.
I have also tested on Intel HD Graphics 4000 inside Core i7-3612QM, the relative speed was 0.14 for medium model, 0.44 for small model. That’s much slower than realtime, but I was happy to find my software works even on the integrated mobile GPU launched in 2012.

best of luck Steve ..

It's likely it's working, but it can take a long time to complete on less performant hardware. Depending on the model and data to process potentially hours.

If I am reading it correctly, a two hour movie, at .14 may take 16 to 18 hours or so, reasonable, I tried one running for two straight days, 48+ hours, and had what seemed to be no progress. I am going to try again.

I use Topaz Lab's Video AI program and unless you have a screaming gamer-type GPU, programs of this sort are just painfully slow. I have an Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU which is fine for what I do most of the time but when it comes to processing videos, it's quite pokey.

I may have to spring for a simple GPU and install it, and at the very least, next system, I'll make sure one is installed from the get go. Bad hearing sucks! Happy new year!

Do you mean you are 100% deaf on one side or have reduced hearing overall on both sides.

This is an important distinction as you can use hearing aids for the latter.

Modern aids all use bluetooth and have a bluetooth streamer which will connect pc to hearing aids - the so the sound quality is vastly improved. Premium Brands like Phonak do not even need a streamer connecting to pc directly.

However, if you are totally deaf on oneside, there is a brilliant system called CROS aids. Basically you have a special aid on deaf side that transmits sound to an aid on the good side so you get 360 degree hearing.

It does mean you need to wear a receiving aid on good side if you do not actually need an aid on good side.

However if you need an aid on "good" side anyway, this is ok as aid doubles up as an aid for good ear and receiver for 100% deaf side. This is called BiCros.

All major brands have a Cros/Bicros system. Regrettably, stereo is not possible as you need two working ears to hear stereo.

As an aside Windows now natively produces subtitles automatically for any video source.

It is not 100% accurate and struggle on homonymns - Ewe khan knot be Sirius instead of You cannot be serious (ok exaggerating slightly). However, your brain sorts the gaps.

Even if you buy any tool to generate subtitles, they all suffer the same issue to a lesser or greater extent.

Subtitles are only accurate if available as a .srt file i.e. not autogenerated.

I am very deaf being 100% deaf on one side and quite deaf on "good" side but with modern aids, my hearing now (with aids) is far better than years ago. In fact many do not even realise I am deaf.

Of course every deaf persons situation is different but modern technology goes a long way to helping deaf people in ways not possible even five years ago.

I am not trying to preach but spreading awareness to any deaf person reading this post.

Ok perhaps my reply goes beyond your question but I am so disappointed at the lack of education about deafness EVEN to deaf people, particularly if older.

When I got my new aids, when I was talking with the audiologist, he said he was impressed with my knowledge joking I could cover for him when on holiday.

But do you know what, I taught myself by listening to many excellent youtube hearing aid videos by professional audiologists!

I encourage any deaf person to watch such videos as investing properly in properly designed aids will significantly improve ones quality of life.

Regrettably, quality aids can be quite expensive but in UK, you can get quite good aids (not top of range) for free on NHS. Downside is waiting list is over 2 years.

Actually quite a few users on this forum are openly deaf on this forum and it has been great to share experiences, and if you feel you want to share your experiences, post in chillout room or even send me a private message if you like.

Good luck anyway with finding a simple solution as per your original post.

Thank you very much! My "right" hearing is fine, it's my left that is the problem, I have nerve damage that causes multi tone tinnitus and everything to sound like it's being spoken via crinkling tin foil, if that makes any sense. So, "deaf" is not really the correct term, more accurately hearing loss due to nerve damage.

Thank you for the suggestion! I have become very familiar with opensubtitles! There is always some oddball release that I can't find there, presumably because the source for some incomprehensible reason chose to release it without subs.

However since my Samsung soundbar is 300 watts 3 chanel I don't have a problem hearing them.
