Hi Folks,

Over the past couple of days I've had a couple of occasions where certain buttons in apps stop working - main example is in Edge where the close button (X in top right) doesn't turn into a white X in a red square when you hover over it, and it does not respond when you click on it. Clicking on the X for each tab you have open works fine, and closing the last tab closes Edge as you would expect.

When on Amazon the buttons for Account, Order and Basket suddenly stopped working but scrolling through products and clicking on them worked fine.

Using Calibre (an ebook manager programme) to scroll through my books when editing metadata the "next" button stopped working, but the "previous" button still worked fine.

Each time it happened simply rebooting my device made everything work fine again.

Anyone any ideas what the problem may be?

Since rebooting the device makes everything work fine again it's a good indication the issue is with Windows explorer. Here are things to try.

First, have you recently installed any new software? Sometimes software conflicts can cause weird stuff to happen.

Just to be sure, verify that your mouse is not faulty. If it's cordless change the batteries. There is a possibility that only some of its clicks are being registered. It's best to check the most obvious things first.

Search for command>select command prompt in search results and run as administrator. Type sfc /scannow to make sure that no operating system files are corrupt. Be sure to check the end of the sfc log to see if corrupted files were fixed.

Try performing a system restore. Search for restore>select create a restore point from search results>select system restore and choose a date before the issue started.

If that doesn't fix your issue you can do a repair install.

Thank you @glasskuter for the response.

Mouse is fine - wireless and fully charged. used on another machine with no problems (but it is intermittent so could be a coincidence).

I've not installed anything new either, although looking in add/remove programmes (or apps & features) I can see that a lot of the apps/programmes I've had for ages are showing as recently installed but guessing that just refers to the latest updates.

Can't try System Restore as I have that turned off to save space. In retrospect maybe not the brightest idea!

Scannow reports no issues.

If it keeps happening then guess my only option will be the repair install.

If there is any doubt, before I went and did a repair install, I would certainly eliminate the possibility of it being the mouse. I've seen my cordless mouse cause all kinds of weird things to happen. I keep a corded mouse in my drawer as a tester.

Then you certainly need to have some sort of backup plan in place to protect yourself. System restore is better than nothing but regular backups are the best insurance. I have found system restore to be iffy at best.

OK, I've found the culprit - it's something to do my external monitor. My device is a laptop and when using it at my desk I connect to an external monitor using a HDMI cable and I run it in "extended display" mode.

The monitor sits to the right of my laptop, and it is the buttons on the right side of Edge / Calibre etc. on my laptop display which stop registering. This is both with my wireless mouse and with the trackpad on my laptop.

I realised this tonight when it happened again and I dragged my open Edge window onto the external display. On the external display all the buttons worked fine. Dragged it back to the laptop display and the buttons on the right did not work.

Unplugged the HDMI and plugged it back in and all worked fine on both the in-built display and the external monitor.

It is almost as if my device gets confused and thinks the open window spans both displays. I only wish I'd thought of this sooner so that I could try and see if there were "ghost" buttons on the external monitor where they would be if indeed the window did span across both displays. I'll try that if/when it happens again.

I have the same issue but it is on my Surface Studio Laptop. In full screen mode cannot select the time line bar in YouTube but if minimise it can change it. At the same time the window close button is not able to be selected. so can't close the window. Have to right click and select close.

Reboot certainly fixes it until it comes back again. It is nothing to do with extended display as the Surface Studio is being used by itself. Everything checks out fine so am suspecting a recent patch is causing issues with Windows Explorer.

I'm having a similar problem. When using a web browser - either Edge or Chrome I'm sometimes unable to click on certain links while I'm able to click on the one above or below. As others have stated the problem goes away on a restart. No to compound things even further I find I can only click on a certain area on the power button. I'm using a Lenovo Yoga notebook with no external monitor
