No sound today on laptop. Volume is on full. Ran the sound troubleshooter and got an AI thing that said did you hear that beep (no) then said it would update the audio driver - I'm sure it didn't change anything and it made no difference. Could it be hardware?

So I just ran the HP hardware test in bios. It said audio passed. Turned on and sound is back again 
The only thing I'm aware that changed this evening, was firefox updated. But system sounds weren't working either. I had already tried restarting twice before.
