As I read that I would assume a 512 GB M.2 is a size limit it supports. Which makes me question it's usefulness.

I just bought a samsung T7 1TB portable SSD for 119.00 a few months ago. I also just bought a 4TB Internal card for 250.00 a few weeks ago. And yes I say the same thing. In my head I say, "When can I get say a 10TB card for 100 right..lol."... Well thats a few years off.

Don't be fooled by the fact that it currently has a $100 discount IMO. The Samsung T7 is still only going to give you 10 Gbps speed, or just a tad over 1,056 MB/s sequential write speed to be precise. So, due to the fact that the 2TB WD Blue SN580 currently sells for $114.90 on Amazon in the US, after you add the 40 Gbps enclosure from WAVLINK at $55.99 it will be $170.89 in total vs $179.99 for the 2TB Samsung T7. The SN580 is fast enough to keep up with 40 Gbps so you'll quadruple the speed and even save $9.10 in the process. If your PC only has a 10 Gbps port and you're not planning to get a 40 Gbps port anytime soon, then grab a 10 Gbps enclosure instead of the 40 Gbps WAVLINK, and save an extra ~$38 in addition to this $9.10 difference. Going by what the specs listed, 2TB is the limit. I think @badrobot is correct and that they just copied and pasted the specs without verifying that they were correct.

I can only speak for myself. I don't have any devices that can use 40 Gbps to its fullness. Even newest desktop can't take full advantage of using 40Gbps. I'm not worried about having drives that are faster then what my systems can handle because I don't see me buying a new computers for a long time. To sum it up, there's nothing wrong with both of our suggestions. It's all up to what @MB11 wants.

TBH, I used to be one of those who was crazy about drive speeds maybe a decade ago when SSDs first came out. But I started to realize that it is just a hype and not very advantageous for regular PC gamer that I used to be. And I just recently. I replaced my 1TB SSD data drive with a 2TB spinner drive. I don't care anymore. :wink:

My PC is running on M.2 SSD but that's just it.
Now I have another 1TB SSD paperweight.

Reality check... if we can assume that the OP is in the US (which is where that $100 discount on the 2TB Samsung T7 is applicable) and also we can assume that the OP only has a 10 Gbps port, then clearly, what is wrong with your suggestion is that it's still going to be ~$47 more expensive than my suggestion, in spite of the fact that they both are 2TB at 10 Gbps.

There nothing wrong with my suggestion except you putting it down. It's up to the OP to decide if they want to go with one of the suggestion we posted or go with something else.

What was a shocker, especially to me, was despite the drive having four times the storage capacity, it was the same physical size as the drive it replaced, and it also cost less in terms of constant dollars sas well. It was also faster. Yeesh, in other words.

Let me put it this way: what specific advantage besides not having to put in that little extra effort that it takes to install the SSD in the enclosure yourself (which should be easy enough to accomplish by just about anyone able to use a precision screwdriver without always breaking stuff) do you think one would be getting for this ~$47 price difference? You said it yourself that they are looking for a low price external SSD. So, my suggestion was to either just pocket the ~$47 difference and simply move on or, if 40 Gbps is better than 10 Gbps (which it is, but you know...), pocket ~$9 difference and simply move on still.

In December of 2020, I bought a 2TB WD SN850 and it was $450.

In Dec of 2023, I bought my son a 4TB WD SN850x and it was $275. Today, it's $319.

The biggest advantage to SSD's,, IMHO, is the insanely low random access times versus a spinning disk. It doesn't take an SSD 12-15ms to move the head around to locate the data.

The full raw throughput can be advantageous under very specific workloads. For example, if you copy multi TB files regularly, all day long....having a drive that provides 7GB/sec versus 2GB/sec is going to make a very noticeable improvement. But for things look booting your OS, launching an app, or starting a game....generally speaking you aren't going to see massive improvements...in fact you most likely won't see any improvement. (I know, there are a few games out there that have insanely long load times that benefit from higher speed drives...but these are the exception and are not the norm).

I moved my games off my WD2TB SN850 over to a 2TBSATA 3 Sandisk SSD. It's 14x slower, 7,000MB vs 550, but i noticed practically no difference whatsoever. But for my VM's, they are much faster on that NVMe...so i try to dedicate that faster SSD for those types of things and leave my games on the standard SATA SSD.

I've only used spinners when I needed very large capacity (like an 8TB-16TB) to house something in the past 10 years. My son has an 8GB spinner that we use for a "parking lot" for games he isn't actively playing. But we recently replaced one of his 1TB NVME's with a 4TB NVMe for the stuff he is actively using.
