OS
Windows 11
So, over the past few months, I've tried several times to update to 26090 or 26080 from 23620.1000 but it fails every time. I know this is a known issue, but has anyone figured out a workaround other than doing a clean install and starting from scratch?

I'm using a ThinkPad X1 Carbon with Core i7-8550U CPU, 16GB of RAM, nothing particularly special. At one time I had Start11 installed but I uninstalled it years ago.

Have you first checked for any corruption using DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth? How are you updating as well? Is it through Windows Update or by doing an in-place upgrade?

Does it supply a windows error code? starting with 0x ??

Could try to reset windows update (already downloaded files), then all files are fresh, and updates will be redownloaded
1. Open Start and type cmd, right-click on "Command Prompt", and select "Run as administrator".
2. Run the following commands at the Command Prompt one at a time:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc

Then also delete this hidden file (will be recreated)
C:\$WinREAgent. A restart might be required.

Then try and update again, Please note, at what % the install get stuck, and what 0x error code you get.

Also, geekinchief

Please fill out your computer specifications with what you have posted above, for future reference...

And

Please type “Winver” into search on your PC and open it. Please type the version and build that it reports, into your “System Specs / OS” section (first on the list, where you have placed “Windows 11”)
Like this for example: Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build 22631.3374

This link will open your System Specs.

Thank you 🙏

GeekInChief - Have you found any resolution to your issue? I also have been stuck on Windows Insider Build 23620 (DEV Channel) since January. Nothing I have tried has allowed me to update, even trying ISO installations. I run windows on a Parallels VM - most current version.

@John59,

[IMPORTANT NOTE] We are investigating reports that some Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels are stuck on Build 26040 or Build 23620. The investigation is ongoing, however if you are impacted by this and really want to get onto the latest build in the Canary or Dev Channel today – you can download the latest ISO here and do a clean install and opt your device back into flighting in the Canary or Dev Channels.

@OAT - Thanks for that. Well aware of the known issue as stated. Just didn't know if anyone has found the solution yet. I have tried the ISO route with no success. I have posted on the Windows Feedback Hub that issue as well as posting it on the Parallels forum. While the problem has been acknowledged, no progress in a solution so far.

You tried a clean install and it still failed?
It solved it for one of my VMs.
