I have an Apple Backup folder that's taking up 103GB of HD space. Can I delete it or will that affect my iTunes library? The folders are dated 5/22/24.

I don't know anything about Apple or iTunes, but I can give you 10 points, just for filling out your computer specs. :-)

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Absolutely no idea about things Apple, but like everything Microsoft it may depend on the synching settings ... what happens one end, happens at the other

Backup to external drive, delete. If it goes pearshaped, restore.

Ditto copy to a different drive first. There is a caveat to pay attention to, just because many folders can have the same date and time the contents within them may not be exactly the same. When copying or moving a folder to a different location the new folder is first created so the current date/time is assigned to it. Files copied/moved to it will retain their date/time. All this to say it is quite easy to lose files if not careful.

There should be a folder in the following location

C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Music\iTunes\

Thats where the iTunes Library Database and Media is stored. Anytime I have clean installed Windows, the above folder is always there due to my backups. I have never backed up any other folder location and iTunes is always there, basically as I last used it, except for the preferences.

That folder contains

  • iTunes Library.itl
  • iTunes Music Library.xml

Somehow, my actual encrypted phone backup is also stored in there, but I may have once upon a time made it that way. And I can tell you that there aren’t multiple instances of my backups. So I don’t know what that is in your images. They very likely may be sync folders if you are used to performing syncs between your iPhone and PC/iTunes. If so, in a sense they are probably not needed. A new one will be created when you re-sync in iTunes.


Other folders include:

iTunes preferences

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist
Or
~/Library/Application Support/iTunes/

But as others have mentioned, backup that folder first before deleting it.

I had a chance to check out that Storage

C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Within the top top level folders were many other folders with the same folder naming structure and dating system as your images.

They're sync backups/information. Mine is 38.5GB

- I deleted both folders. Nothing went wrong.
- iTunes started up again exactly the same.

Just in case, I performed another backup and another sync, however deleting a sync job shouldn't interfere with the iPhone or iTunes.

Still, just to be 100% certain, backup the 100GB (If you can) for peace of mind until you're comfortable that there were no adverse affects.

Just NEVER delete the iTunes folder in your Music folder. That’s where you’re going to face trouble with your iTunes Library.
