Stuck on 22H2 after factory reset

Performed a factory reset on laptop (MSI Raider GE78HX 13VH-046UK Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i9-13950HX up to 5.5GHz, 32GB DDR5, 2TB NVMe SSD, 17" 16:10 QHD+(2560 x 1600) 240Hz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 12GB, Windows 11 Home) due to issues with running games. It BSOD'd during the factory reset but it continued reinstallation, but when it got to Windows Updates it failed and told me it was taking me to the desktop where I could run windows update.

Windows Update seemed to be working fine but when it got to a cumulative update for 22H2 it failed at the end. It did show in the optional updates that I could install 24H2 so tried that and again it failed.

I tried the usual shutting down of services to clear the WU cache, etc but it still failed to install either of those updates.

I downloaded Windows 11 ISO from MS, mounted it and tried an in-place install. It got about half-way before it failed.

I tried a clean installation of Windows 11 from a USB stick created by MS's media creation tool. Again it failed.

I've tried sfc and DISM but no issues are found.

I'm pretty much stuck.

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.


  • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
  • Go to System > Troubleshoot
  • Click on Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update and click Run button.



Download Windows updates manually.


  • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
  • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
  • Select the correct version and click Download
  • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer



Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

Thanks. I forgot to add that I tried both of the first methods. WU troubleshooter found no problems and the manual installation didn't work either.

Will try reseting WU after work.

What jumps out at me about this is you say you tried a clean install and it failed as well. Done correctly, nothing in the old version of windows affects a clean install at all.

I'd have thought so too but I ran an install from a usb drive and after loading the appropriate Intel RST driver from MSI (SSD didn't show up until I had), a short while into the installation it gave an error.

Once you have run the factory reset it will take maybe a day or more to carefully do all the updates oldest ones first.
You have to do the oldest ones first as later ones will have prerequisites requiring older updates to be done.
A cumulative update should be a single selection after older updates have been done. They take an age and also wait sometime after any restart.

New updates will appear as well. It seems to be never ending but follow the oldest first principle a few at a time, not 20+ at once.

From memory 22H2 and 24H2 are version updates. They are lengthy as version updates, all previous updates need to be done first.

Looks like you have interrupted updates and started to mess about.

I might be worth checking your hardware. At the very least a memory diagnostic and SMART check of your SSD.

Did you reset the BIOS at any point?

Will do. No, didn't touch the BIOS.

After the factory reset it successfully installed the system updates prior to the Cumulative one for 22H2 but that failed. In optional updates there was an option to install 24H2 so I select that one. That failed too. I haven't interrupted any updates and I hadn't "messed around" with the system prior to that.

I would update the BIOS to latest version, then update the drivers (from MSI), and then try the updates again.

I managed to get the 22h2 cumulative update to work.

However, 24h2 feature update gets to 100% reboots several times and then rolls back to 22h2.

Tried another in-place install from Windows ISO but got this after it failed.

BIOS and drivers are all up to date. SFC and DISM don't find any issues.

The "Process Drivers for Migration" is typically caused by incompatible drivers. Have you updated the drivers for all your hardware?

Windows Update updated most of them and a few had to be updated via MSI Center's Live Update feature, but yes they're all up to date.

I also checked Memory Integrity in Windows Security and it had no issues with any drivers.

This sounds like either a hardware issue or a software block from MS preventing upgrade. Since you don't seem to be able to even get a clean install completed I'm leaning to some kind of hardware glitch.
