What's happened, and how do I make it go away. Using this 11 machine all day without this, and suddenly, there it is.

Okay, so I opened my Username folder and created a folder called Desktop, and the pop-up seems to have gone away. But that's not the right cure, I'm sure, and I don't know what the disease was.
Any help appreciated.
Dan

Is DAW your user name directory?
If so, then the Desktop folder was probably accidentally dragged into one of the other User files (ie) Pictures, Music, Documents etc or it was accidentally deleted.
If you find the original Desktop folder, right click it, choose Properties\Location and push the Restore Default button to return it to the DAW directory.

This example shows that Windows 11 still doesn't have enough auto-restoration options. In such case, when the vitally important directory is absent by some reason, the error dialog should also give an option to restore it in the default place. Adding one button could significantly help an ordinary user. It also might give a suggestion to use System Restore, which is another option if the folder is irrecoverably lost.

If you customise the location of the user folders using the built in options there is no issue - if there is an accidental move of one the user folders it provides an error message to inform the user, this should be enough, warnings need to inform - automatic correction could result in multiple copies of the data or a total loss of data, which would not be a good thing

I think that it would probably / possibly recreate the empty folder in the correct location, but would leave the old folder as an orphan containing the original files - the message states that it cannot find the folder, the SFC would not be able to either

I personally think that this is one of those things that is only correctable by manual means, locate the folder and return it to its original location and do it as quick as possible, before the damage spirals ;)

If you wish to relocate any of the user folders, you are better off using the included standard option - right click on the folder and select the location option on the tabs - follow the instructions and the folder will be moved with an option to move the contents.
If you ever wish to go back to standard it's a single click option

@Spunk
It's nowhere to be found. Everything reminded me that there are others in Default and Public, but they belong there.
I have nothing at all on my desktops, so the Desktop folders on my PCs are always empty anyway. The creation of a new, empty folder with the name Desktop seems to have satisfied Windows 11, because there has been no recurrence of that pop-up since I did that.
Thank you.
Dan

If you customise the location of the user folders using the built in options there is no issue - if there is an accidental move of one the user folders it provides an error message to inform the user, this should be enough, warnings need to inform - automatic correction could result in multiple copies of the data or a total loss of data, which would not be a good thing
"I think that it would probably / possibly recreate the empty folder in the correct location, but would leave the old folder as an orphan containing the original files
"If you wish to relocate any of the user folders, you are better off using the included standard option"
Didn't customize, didn't move. I did use Shawn's reg file to Remove All User Folders from this PC, as I always did on W10, since I never have any use for them. (Hate storing things on C:\. Any docs, pics, vids, music, whatever that I store, I store on a separate data drive. C: has Windows and my browsers, and that's about all.) So I DID recreate the empty folder in the right location, and aside form the fact that Windows hasn't given it the standard greenish-blue icon, it seems to be doing the job of an empty folder: occupying space and Being There.
Thank you for your counsel.
Dan

To change your Desktop location, you can use @Spunk's solution or make an symbolic link.
I have no wish to change my Desktop location. I moved nothing (at least intentionally). When I had seen the pop-up about ten times, and had posted the OP above, I just decided to try creating a new, empty Desktop folder in that location, and it seems to have done the job.
Thank you.
Dan

Takes you to your user's folder.
;) You may not believe this, but I know where my user's folder is. Don't need Run+ . to find it for me. :D
I made a Desktop folder there, and the problem seems to have stopped. In fact, when Everything found all the Desktop folders on this PC, it showed the Desktop folder in my user's folder with the correct blue-green Windows 11 icon!

Hey, thanks, man.

I'm going to go ahead and mark this Solved, even though the mystery about what happened to that folder and caused the pop-up lingers on. I've been on for several hours this morning and a few more last night with the make-believe Desktop folder sitting there empty, and no error messages. I may never know. Best guess is that the suggestion that I accidentally deleted it is the explanation, though I've no ----ing idea how I could have done that. I'm almost never in that level of my user's folder (though I frequently access the user Start Menu Programs folder through a shortcut; but I mostly do Start things in the ProgramData folder.)

My gratitude to the whole remarkably kind and helpful lot of you.

Dan

Moving the actual users folder has in the past on occasion caused various issues - It's not always a problem but it can be.

I also do not like to keep the folders on my system drive so after using various methods in the past with mixed results when The option of the built in method became available I tried it and it worked to relocate the folders and their contents to a duplicate file structure on my data drive - the duplication is to assist where some applications insist on saving into their own folders lower down it the standard data tree. the saving of files to the standard folders by some applications is covered by this method

I have used this method on many systems over the years without a serious issue and if you need to re-install the OS a quick repeat of the move procedure (without actually moving any files), sets up the links again which has worked for me for in place updates and moving data onto new hardware with a new OS

I don't understand. Did you think I moved any folders? All my user folders are in their original places on C: I create my own folder system on a separate drive and all my downloads, pics, etc. go into those folders, leaving the original user folders permanently empty.

If I accidentally deleted the empty Desktop in my user folder, the on-purpose recreation of a substitute empty Desktop folder seems to have been all I needed.
