They didn’t accept any NFC payments, at least in the US. They have a QR-based system, I think it’s called Walmart Pay or something, and there’s something else called One Pay.

EU has recently introduced mandatory instant QR payments, which will most likely phase out outdated card payments.
I use Lidl Pay, but they are launching Scan and Go. You will scan items with a phone, put in a bag and leave the shop.
China has gone even further, AI will detect what you put in a bag and charge you upon leaving using your face only.

in UK we have been able to use Google Pay (via contactless payment) widely (including major supermarkets) since 2018 although earlier versions started as early as 2011. Technically Wal

The UK integrated banking clearance system means we can transfer money to others via a users own banking app in seconds, only requiring a users bank account and sort code. We never need stupid apps like Venmo.

I am bemused about how backwards the USA is compared with UK. I understand cheques are still used by around 5% of users in USA aa their preferred payment method.

However chrque payment is rarely used in UK (less than 0.1% of users use them anymore). It is easily a decade since I last used one - bizarrely the last time I received a cheque was a tax rebate for HMRC (UK tax authourity). I have not possessed a cheque book for over a decade.

As an aside technically Walmart had Google Pay in UK for years as it owned ASDA until its controlling shareholder interest was sold in 2021.

No need to be so personally rude.

Use of tools like Venmo show US banking system is still years behind UK/EU.

In fact EU is introducing new card payment systems that USA is scared off as it totally bypassing the stranglehold of Visa/Mastercard meaning transaction fees will not flow to USA. For smaller traders fees are much lower (and kept inside EU). For larger traders transactions still attract a percentage fee but at lower rates than using Visa etc.

Key initiatives include the development of a state-backed digital euro by the European Central Bank and the expansion of Wero, an instant account-to-account payment network by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), designed to handle cross-border transactions without using American payment rails.

Regrettably UK has not yet embraced this but has been invited to participate. It seems UK may develop its own similar system reducing reliance on Visa etc.

Debit and credit cards still widely used around here. No need for a smartphone to use one of those, either.

Out of principle, I shouldn't have to own a smartphone in order to access my own money, anyway....

Not as backwards as you think. 20 years ago I used to write 6 - 7 checks a month. That was down from the 25/month I used to write in the 1990s.

Now I'm lucky if I have to write 1 -3 per year, and that usually due to writing a check as being the only option for payment, depending upon which state government tax bureaucracy one has to deal with.

And yes, cash is still a thing with many small shops no longer affording the cc fees that Mastercard and Visa now charge.
