Technical Question

Please no laughing---
If I preform a Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade, as detailed in the tutorial section, will that process "fix" any registry issues I may have intorduced by playing with things I shouldn't have....
BACKGROUND-
I used a 3rd party app to preform a registry cleaning a short while ago and have since been experiencing an error in that the SHELLEXPERIENCEHOST.exe stops working.
There's no system crash. I only see this when I look at the computers reliability and problem history via control panel--it shows as a critical event.

That's part of the HAZARDS of playing in the Registry, gets things a bit messed up but carries the possibility of killing Windows.

Yes, some if not all of the 'customizations' will be replaced as updates and upgrades do a lot of rewriting of the Registry. Installations of programs do make changes.

I've seem to have learned that lesson the hard way but the fix is easily implemented

Did perhaps the 3rd party utility you used do an existing registry export before the "cleaning"?

I wouldn't bet that a repair install will 100% fix Registry errors. But I don't know for sure.

I have used the free version of CCleaner to clean the registry. It offers the option to save keys (as .reg files) before deleting them. I've never suffered harm from CCleaner, and never restored deleted keys. CCleaner is sufficiently gentle that I've needed to manually edit the Registry on rare occasions, to make sure that an uninstall of an overly intrusive program was complete. (There are always entries that cannot easily be deleted, though.) Not that I'm competent to do that.

PowerRun (not a cleaner/sweeper.) will run regedit at the highest privileges so you can delete a protected file, running regedit as admin wont allow manipulation of some entries.

How to remove "Extract All.." from .RAR Context Menu.

I used WinAero Tweaker to get rid of "Extract All..." from Context Menu and it worked, but only for .ZIP files. "Extract All.." still appears in .RAR files (and possibly other file types as well?). Is there any way to disable it? I'm using Windows 11 26100.1297

There are many types of "angles" [sic], all of which are involved in mathematics, but none are known to tread. It would certainly appear that obtuse angles are annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand.

FWIW-
I've used CCleaner for a LONG time(started when it was the old CRAPCLEANER....I switched to the free version of WISE CARE 365 as I got tired of seeing CCleaner telling me I had out of date drivers...A few weeks ago I ,in error, used the registry cleaner in Wise Care.....that's when I first noted the error issue with SHELLEXPERIENCEHOST.exe. To my knowledge there's no fallback in the app after the use of the cleaner....or I failed to see it....
or I simply didn't say yes to a BU...
It's been a bit crazy here--I'll try the repair install of the OS and advise on the out-come.
PS- I just realized that I've a 1-month old MACRIUM disk image available---I'll use that....

In my opinion, the only registry entries that should be removed are known dependable tweaks, or left over registry entries from uninstalled software.

For the latter I’d recommend REVO uninstaller and set it to scan for leftovers. Even better, install software using REVO and it will know exactly what to take out when uninstalling using REVO.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I spent an hour once (maybe longer) trying to repair/troubleshoot a computer that I forgot to plug in.

I'm still not convinced that a bloated Registry bogs down your PC!
(Somebody's gonna come along and prove me wrong!!!)

I agree regarding regisrty bloat....I always let an app like REVO do an app uninstall and never trust 3rd party apps for registry cleanup....

The basic design of the registry hasn't changed since Windows 2000. Computer performance has. Fixing poor performance then was a matter of stopping accidentally added programs running, and making sure that the PC had enough RAM. Registry bloat wasn't an issue then even though most users had access to the system registry (which did give full scope for wrecking the OS). For most users any PC that supports Windows 11 and has at least 8GB of RAM should be fine.

If you're running programs without admin rights (i.e. not elevated) then you can only add registry entries in your profile under HKCU. So, if you're curious, you could create a new ordinary user account, and logon with that to see if it makes any difference. If it does, then it probably still isn't registry bloat, but you can see what is different in terms of programs running and other per-user configurations. I would always keep away from 3rd party programs that offer to "clean" registry or anything else. The same goes for any tweaking software that requires admin rights to run. If it doesn't require admin rights to run, then you can test it on your newly created user account. Once you've messed that up enough, you can log off from that account and delete the user profile from an admin account and start again!

The main advantage I've seen in the years of using CCleaner [originally named CrapCleaner] has been an obvious improvement with Web Browsers' cache. Other cleaning may not always be as quickly noticed.
