Solved thinking of getting macrium x, but need more info.

i know the speed improvement is great, seen their video. even if its 50% faster im already satisfied, but more than that i wish to know the storage efficiency.

in macrium's own announcement, the new image uses different compression and is more efficient but they dont have examples. i understand its file dependent but would be nice for people who has X to share some info before i can decide

any help/info is appreciated. basically hoping to see at least a 5-10% reduction, say a 120GB image file down to 110 or 105GB

If no one can give you a satisfactory answer my suggestion would be to download the trial version of Reflect X and do a side-by-side comparison on your system to get a real-world value in space savings (if any).

So much also depends on the hardware in use- interface speed if using external USB disks e.g.

1 person recently reported an image being created (don't think it was identified specifically as full or maybe even how much) in a couple of seconds, with enormous transfer rate. Probably to an internal M2 SSD rather than the much more cautious (and I think appropriate as the base for a backup strategy) external disk.

Macrium is now using CPU instructions specific to compression and encryption instead of pure software. This is why it is faster. As far as I am aware, no other changes to compression have been made. It is a much better product now.

nvme to nvme I takes me 31 seconds total for a 70+ GB C: + EFI + recovery partitions with compression (medium) and 256 encryption plus a verification read pass. This is a full backup.
In addition. it takes less than 30 seconds for a recovery from nvme to nvme. It compresses to about 47 GB on disk

thanks for this, i am NVMe to NVMe as well.

btw, do u still know your old image size of similar window size? (70GB but with macrium v8, and what was the result of image size in compression?)

lastly, which CPU instruction is it taking advantage of? so that I know that my older machine cannot benefit from this. some of my machines are older gen intel maxes at avx1 (not even have avx2 nor 512).

Hi,

Don't know the Macrium 8 compressed sizes but if not identical, close, as far as I can remember.

Encryption and compression: Intel AES New Instructions

Compression: Intel SSE4.1, Intel SSE4.2, Intel® AVX2

Plus others for compression I think, like parallel multi-core processing.

BTW the performance numbers I posted above were with Hyper-threading disabled on my 13900ks processor.

Here's ten points, just for filling out your computer specs.

Even on version 8.1 backups and restores are fast. At the default compression setting (medium), a 120GB Windows install will compress to about 60GB.

I can give you my ballpark experience with it on an AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT system. Long story short, 10 was just a little faster than 8 and resulted in slightly smaller images.

Windows 10 fresh install. ~15 GB used on a 512 GB 4xGen3 NVME SSD.
Full images to/from an internal 1 TB SATA SSD.

Making a full image @High compression takes about ~40 seconds and results in a ~7.40 GB file (Macrium 8 was ~60-80 seconds for a ~7.80 GB file)
Restoring just the changed bits (forgot the term) is stupid fast, like 14 seconds. Restore to an empty disk would probably be ~40 seconds again?

The problem for me is that "rent-an-app" subscription license, so I stick with 8 or Hasleo (which is just as fast, if not faster, and results in slightly smaller image files of ~7.20 GB).

i have the v8 macrium. but i think generally speaking its the restore process thats really sped up, back up is faster due to better compression but overall size remains similar from others experience.

this is alli needed, just few experiences from users who had them and able to compare between 8 and v10. thanks for the help guys!

There is no better Program to use to backup your system. I have used it for years v7,v8 & X with no issues.

My experience matched that of @Quexos -- slightly faster, slightly smaller. Not the huge increases in speed and much smaller images that others were seeing.

Not nearly enough (to me) to justify the enormous increase in price over 8.1. V8.1 cost me $100 for a 4-pack that lasted me three years before Ver X came out. That works out to $8.33 per system per year.

When Ver X came out, it was $50 per system, per year -- a nearly six-fold increase in price. I think they are offering the first year at a discount now, but other years are still $50. That's too much of an increase for me.

So, I'm sticking with 8.1 as that continues to work very well for me.

One of the things new in X is the ability to easily exclude files/folders.
In previous versions you have to mess around with the registry key.

I still use 8.1 on two intel machines which I find plenty fast on those, actually blazing fast on the core ultra 9 lol. Now I tired X on the little ARM64 machine since 8.1 doesn't support ARM. My subscription is fixing to expire in a couple weeks and I'm letting it for a couple reasons.

Besides the cost and the fact I hate subscription software I find on ARM64 both Macrium X and Hasleo Backup run very slowly on ARM (in comparison to intel anyway). I also like the simplicity and intuitive interface of Hasleo Backup. Also Hasleo is free and great for the basic weekly full backups I do and all I need.

Macrium 10 , is the very best backupper , I use on a regular base .
Its very fast , reliable ( used it , never problems ! ).
Backups will be saved on ext.drives/SSDs............

After using the boot-ISO of the latest Macrium-version ; 10.0.8843 , I get a red restore-partion on my C-disk ( Windows11 ), when making a backup of Windows 11. This shows up after latest Windows-updates ( yesterday )
Never seen before , any idea ..............??
Something wrong with the C-SSD ........??
