Thoughts on Windows 11

Hey mate, :)

Did you already check the permissions of the drive to make sure your account is listed with full control access rights?

Hi,
I did on another small hdd this is actually the second time win-11 has messed up permissions so bad I had to reformat this is a new 750gb hdd wd black

Either way made the two new folders and x299 and z490 system images successful this time.
Folders created on win-7
10 would probably work too

I wonder what percentage of Windows users ever modify the OS more than change the Wallpaper and maybe change the UI Colour? Most will load their applications and use the OS as it's delivered to them with their shiny new computer.

Business users will rarely have the ability to modify anything

The users here expect more out of the OS, and want as much customisation as possible but we are still only a tiny percentage of the total Windows users.

Now a lot of members here took part in the Insiders program, and got an early copy of the OS - but how many of those users actually gave microsoft Feedback on the things that they did not like, the additional steps to perform a simple action, the inability to have a function that way they preferred.

Now, if everyone who was part of the insiders program sent in a regular set of requests and comments, the changes may have been dialled back or even not made, this is despite the fact that the complete insiders program only contained a small percentage of the potential users of Windows 11
I have to admit that you have a good point. After I defected to I&R, I got to see a lot of both business and home user computers. The few home users that actually complained about the OS did not know about and/or never actually gave feedback to MS. Businesses (even small businesses) usually had the stations locked down or forbade employees from making changes. That doesn't mean people were happy; they just didn't complain. (I know that kinda puts a pin in by balloon, but read on.) During the Win 8 revolution, I had one customer that was ready to throw his "shiny new computer" out the door, and was quite vocal about it ! I doubt that he ever gave MS feedback, even though I gave him the info to do it. Although... when I say millions of users... There are a lot of power users out there that DO complain and give feedback to MS. This forum is a good case in point. Through customers, boards, forums and chats (not just this one) I have gathered that there is a huge number of dissatisfied people that do give input. I also have to admit, that sometimes MS actually listens. After a long hiatus, my up arrow came back in Windows Explorer. yeah... it was in Win 8, and at that time my opinion was that it was like putting perfume on a pig, but I was glad to see it back. It continued in Win 10. Without whining and complaining (and a lot of it.), I'm pretty sure it never would have made it back.

So... you and others are right. Not only is business the main revenue for MS; home user representation to MS is comparatively very small. Without people like me that whine though, I feel MS would sit back in their easy chair and think everything is rosy. On boards, forums and chats like this one, I can connect with others that are just as frustrated as I am, if only for affirmation. Although very rarely, sometimes something positive will come out of it. Other times, perhaps a much needed reality check. Everyone's opinion matters to me. Even those that run counter to my own. This is what makes discussion great. I will continue to express my frustration and maybe; just maybe, someone will listen to our faint cry, and something good will come of it.

Hi,
That has been my policy every since 10 was released
I remember when 10 complete trashed hdd put them to sleep and only linux could revive them

But just the winpe writing to a folder and failing is insane.

NEWS FLASH, Windows 11 is NOT WIN 10, and WIN 10 is NOT WIN 8.1 etc etc etc

Everyone likes to bitch & moan about a successful enterprise, and complaining about how Windows 11 functions is NO exception.

Less than 20% of revenue received by Microsoft is from its operating systems. The majority of that is gained through corporate and vendor licensing. Only a small percentage of that 20% is actually from personal sales of Windows.

Their business model is NOT about ignoring home users, it is all about what contributes financially to make a cost effective business.

With that in mind, why would Microsoft actually change their operating systems to meet the needs of its personal user base? That would be financial suicide and like what I have said before in another one of my posts, the shareholders would not be happy.

As the financial minority (home users) we have a choice, accept the FREE offering of an upgrade or continue using your original system.

My guess would be if Microsoft all of a sudden stopped free upgrades and personal users had to pay a software license of (I don't know) lets say $200 or more then there would be less complaints and only the genuine who want or need the new operating system for what it is would buy it.

Is it PERFECT, far from it, but neither is real life, and we either accept it for what it is, make do with what has been offered for FREE, or stick with what you had before.

I used only Apple products for 29 years. I switched to Windows with 10 and Android about the same time. Android was the best choice I ever made whereas Windows has been decent and doable but frustrating and hard to recommend to Mac users.

It's frustrating because Microsoft doesn't care to release proper operating systems and most of their users are not only used to this but many (in this thread) actually apologize for it on behalf of a rather successful corporation.

A proper operating system isn't how I or any individual defines it. It's not how 'normal' people vs. 'enthusiasts' define it. When we take in Android, iOS, Mac OS, Chrome OS, the better Linux distros -- the hallmarks of a proper operating system are rather simple --

1. Consistency within the OS. (For instance, if you offer dark mode in the system, it should be offered everywhere.)
2. Hallmark Upgrade Releases should be (pretty much) across the Board (Task Manager should look and feel like Win11)
3. The system recognizes design advances made in competitor operating systems and adopts the smart ones
4. Oh, this should have been first: stability and security

Now, to give MS credit, I am stunned at how stable and secure Windows is. This is everything. I've given up dabbling with Linux because it simply isn't stable. Despite Zorin 16 having a far better operating system look and feel compared to Windows. No stability, no OS.

Since Linux is 4 guys and a chimpanzee but Microsoft is a billion dollar corporation -- there can be no excuse for a half baked operating system.

"The majority of that is gained through corporate and vendor licensing. Only a small percentage of that 20% is actually from personal sales of Windows."

I do not understand how this perspective is relevant to topic. Analogy: Dunkin' Donuts. Suppose Dunkin' Donuts had a HUGE corporate office delivery business. That 80% of their sales are delivered from stores to offices and thatonly 20% is actually from personal sales in stores.

So what? If they make produce proper donuts and coffee -- Dunkinsoft can please both types of customers at the same time. And if the corporate customers are too busy to notice there isn't enough cinnamon on the cinnamon donuts -- bless the personal consumers who noticed this and asked for the right amount.

To me this is that simple.

"As the financial minority (home users) we have a choice, accept the FREE offering of an upgrade or continue using your original system."

It's not free. We pay the OEMs some money for their licenses. And the notion of charging directly for OSes is done.

"Is it PERFECT, far from it, but neither is real life -- "

... whoa whoa whoa. (Sound of trash truck backing up... BEEP BEEP BEEP.) I can't speak for others but I'm not asking for perfection. I'm asking for Microsoft to do what Apple Mac OS, iOS, Android, Chrome OS, and better Linux Distros already do: offer a proper OS at the time of release.

Microsoft could easily steal back a chunk of Mac OS business. Windows 11 simply needs to be finished. I know operating systems evolve over time but what I mean is they need to finish what they started here. Before they introduce the Android Subsystem they should have Windows itself far more polished along the obvious guidelines that the Feedback Hub has provided them. If they don't --

-- it means the Android subsystem will be released as a half-@$$ed mess as well.

Hmmm... Check your advanced sharing settings for password and permissions. I am running a server in my office connected to three mini fanless PCs attached to TVs for streaming and networking. I also have a laptop and a windows tablet on the network. I have no trouble creating folders on other machines, streaming files or working across the network. My issues are
1. Every time I get a windows update, the network crashes on the affected server or station and I cannot see other stations on the network.
2. Stations randomly drop off the network. Resetting the wireless adapter does not work. The network needs to be reset every time on the affected station(s)

These seem to be common problems with Win 10, even across business networks that are controlled by IT personnel a lot smarter than I am. MS is currently blaming security programs or third party software for the issues.

Since you need a password to get onto my network. I have disabled the need for a separate password to control files across the network. (If someone like me gets their hands on my router connected to the server, its all over anyway.) I also set the permissions to "Everyone" on all authorized devices on all networks, thus eliminating log on issues. Network discovery, Streaming and printing are enabled, and Automatic discovery is selected. This is a home network, and I have all my accounts locked and pass worded. This may be a small inconvenience, but nobody can break into my house and order anything from (lets say) my Amazon account on an open computer. Different operating systems cooperated when I was running seven and ten at the same time. I had no problems using different operating systems across the network. Hope this helped.

I don't agree with most you said here but the above is true - I'm Microsoft certified but I assure you those developing Windows component's now (most likely outsourced) are not.. well not to the standard we were taught.

Hi,
Since each computer has their own password and aren't accessing the disks at the same time usually by usb in external but creating a system image would be connected by sata and some times folder is created on either one it really it's just 11 or past win-10 takes ownership of the disk just creating a empty folder lol
10 has never failed to make permissions so bad reflect winpe recovery media would fail writing a system image to the folder
Only 11 is making that error.

I tried to straighten out the permissions problem and it wasn't possible so I reformatted/ rebuilt the mbr first... and basically started over
It was only a little 250gb hdd I use a few system images but was still bloody infuriating lol

@barman58 I totally agree with you Nigel. I have always said right from the start that most people joined the insiders program to get an early look at 11 ( I did for that reason ) but I did send feedback. I think a lot of people found the hub hard to use and some didn't even know about it.

@barman58 I totally agree with you Nigel. I have always said right from the start that most people joined the insiders program to get an early look at 11 ( I did for that reason ) but I did send feedback. I think a lot of people found the hub hard to use and some didn't even know about it.
I didn't join the insiders, as my prognosis back at the time was that doing so would inevitably ruin the taste of my popcorn after it was ready, so instead I had decided to just w8 4 suspense.

If you install the HEIC and HEVC codecs, see links in my previous post, you should be ok. You'll need to install both for the images to open.

So that didn’t work. It is also happening on my Windows 10 computer now too. Done a bit of research and it is something that iPhone owners have had since August. Some have contacted Apple and Microsoft. One finally had confirmation from Microsoft that it is a bug in Windows. The only way round it at the moment is to use Microsoft photos to import the photos (not as intuitive as selecting individual files snd copying and pasting). If it’s just one photo you can email it from the phone and open it on the computer and download it from the email. As it’s now on 10 as well as 11 and only since August, just wondering if it’s something from a Windows update.

POPCORN SIDEBAR --

You know how you can spot a guy and say 'That dude drinks way more liquor than most people.' Well if I walked by you -- you'd never notice that I eat more popcorn than most people. Way more.

The secret is a wok. That's really it. No air frying, not machines, just a wok. Oh yeah: and a cover. lol

But now the embarrassing part. (I love to share stories where I goof up.) So I have maybe 3 big batches of popcorn a week, right? And I use vegetable oil to pop the kernels. A little Sea Salt or such.

For years I was like, yeah, this is good popcorn. My friends were like, yum. But every once in a while I was like... well... why doesn't it taste EXACTLY like cinema popcorn? Are they using a special corn? A special dusty salt? What IS it?

Experts already saw the error. Where I said 'vegetable' oil it should read 'peanut' oil. I'm telling you I must have had a thousand bowls of corn before I discovered that it's either Peanut Oil or you wish you did. Yes veg oil will do but we're talking flank vs. rib-eye.

Lord.. alcoholic vs popcorn eater? Being a recovering 'alcoholic' I find that to be a bizarre comparison.

You can't understand that a binge drinker can be compared to a binge popcorn eater?
