Thoughts on Windows 11

I thought I'd live with 11 for a few days and get used to it but, uh. uh. It's not happening for me.

I have been sitting on the sidelines watching forums like this and Reddit before I make a decision on my main PC. I do have a clean installation on a separate partition so that I can try it out. Like you, I have a lot of little things about it that I don't like it (taskbar/Start, etc.), and I'm perfectly happy with my existing setups on my two machines. I do like some of the newer icons and certain visual elements much better than those in Win10, but for me that's not a compelling reason to upgrade.

I am almost certain (95%+) I'm going to hold off until at least the first feature update next fall, maybe even longer. I was already planning on keeping my machine that is not supported on Win10 for at least a few feature updates so I can be reasonably confident the updates won't stop at some point should I choose to upgrade it.

The comments, complaints, and reviews I'm seeing are reminding me a bit of Windows 8, and I can't help but wonder if they're going to address a lot of the bigger complaints in an 11.1 or something like they did with 8. I do hope they don't change any of the hardware requirements. I do think a new version was warranted for those changes alone.

Hi,
Yep too much third partyware needed for sure.
I have 10 & 11 on separate ssd's now so easy to switch.
I'm iffy. On the one hand I like it and think it's fast and productive. On the other hand - I get absolutely no "joy" from using it in its current state and getting frustrated trying out third party apps which I don't want to use - so will keep it on one machine for fiddling about with but use my windows 10 machine to actually do anything. Maybe I'll wait to see if anything much changes.

Although I don't dislike it visually I just don't find it intuitive or customisable and some menus are confusing - repetitive (options in more than one menu) - just not quite right.

The operating system itself seems very good - but the user functionality, to me, is really badly designed - in some places, not all. Paint has changed to the point that it really is awful. And you also need extremely good eyesight. If I had to "choose" between that and windows 10 I'd choose windows 10 - it's easier. Menus need to be menus.

Who is it made for? People with touch screens.

I'm currently running Windows 11 on an old unsupported laptop with no TPM, no secure boot, and a legacy BIOS. While some thing have changed from Windows 10, I like it, but not overly excited about it. Basically just did a clean install and only aade Office 365, Google Chrome, and Macrium reflect to it just to check out W11.

I have a newer Dell laptop which meets all the requirements to update to 11, but I'm waiting until it's offered on WU. Also have a HP desktop with W10, which is primarily used by the SO, and as a file server. Tthat system does not qualify for W11 and won't upgrade it

The machine I'm keeping it on is a netbook and I'm keeping it on that because it is working incredibly well - it has really brought it to life - quite amazing really. Runs much better on W11 than W10.

I remember in a teaching course being told that people have different sensory learning styles. Some are more visual, some more kinaesthetic. So certain styles of operating aren't going to work for some people. A design needs to be both visual and kinaesthetic (ie hands on style that works with all brain types).

Sorry I'm just pontificating! It works - but for me only good if you ignore the start menu altogether and pin everything to the task bar. And some of the other menus (and the new style paint) are awful - teeny tiny light coloured icons). If it makes you have to think too hard then it's not pleasant. Took me ages to work out how to resize a photo in paint.

Just my take on it, and "It is what it is!"

Ever since the evolution of Operating Systems (MS-DOS, DR-DOS & PC-DOS) and the development of Windows through out its changes, it has had its critics & its believers.
The old saying “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time”.

Basically Microsoft receive the majority of their revenue from Business and as such will develop and cater to that market.
Like most corporations they answer and work to keep their shareholders happy and their success will be determined by the Stock-market.
Currently their shares are on a steady increase so they must be doing something right.

Personal users and what they WANT, come a distant second in their considerations.

All being said and done, we are lucky to have a choice and have access to something that in most cases is free.

Whilst I have my own preferences to what I want in an ideal OS (it will never happen), I have chosen to use Windows 11, adapt, modify, streamline and move on with what they have offered.

Bottom line, that has been my choice (if it all goes pear shape, I can always go back to Windows 10)

No.. I'm just giving you an option. Take it for what it's worth
I really would like an answer to my question :D
But alas, yes Linux is an "option". I have a Linux Distro on a VM. I just haven't got round to running on native H/w. Some of my S/W also runs on Linux so such a transition could be workable. I might have to run Windows in a Linux VM for the S/W that only runs on Windows. I want to learn how to program the Linux interface, really.

Unfortunately, when it comes to "Keeping the lights on and paying the bills" commercial decisions are made in the best interest of keeping a company afloat.

Yes, it is basically an Operating System for all, but in what direction Microsoft decide to take it, their first priority must be to keep their paying customers happy.

As I said, we have a choice, use it for what it is, or use something else.

We may not like it, but we should respect the decision of any company that chooses viability over popularity.

Time will tell if their decisions are correct, but for now, it appears they have made a sound business decision IMO.

Question? Oh.. I don't expect my 2c to matter to MS when it comes to the OS and to be honest,.. that doesn't bother me one bit. MS's job is to make an OS for their customer base and that's businesses and not us. I don't pay for Windows and therefore my say is sort of irrelevant to them. But in the end I do like 11 as much as I liked 10 and 8.1 and 7. EDIT: I did have to buy a copy of 10 Home but other than that I didn't buy any other versions. But I doubt my 115 didn't get me any notice from MS.

If you don't like what MS is doing you have the option to use Linux or just keep using 10. It's going to be around for 4 more years. And no,, I'm not a sheep. I'm realistic and I understand that I get Win11 for free and I like it.
My 2c.,. Your millage may vary

The decision will work out because business will pay for it or other MS products.

Not the same thing at all. For example I can't use Capture One Pro and Powerdirector on linux. Although xubuntu has a much better menu!
