Further to the advantages of the local login, I much prefer this display whenever I take the laptop out for coffee and a donut (it much prefers plain to glazed), without my email addy publicly displayed:

That is not true. A Microsoft Account does nothing to increase the amount of personalizing Windows 10 or 11 that the user can do.

I agree. I HAVE an MS account, I just don't use it for my Windows install.

I went to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures" and changed the names of five original files to "Xold" and then pasted my wiz's face five times with the previous filenames. I think Brink showed me what to do in a tut, but I'm not sure. (Almost always when I do sthg I think is clever, Brink showed me how to do it.)

I have a custom user picture too. Just change the default picture from Settings, Accounts with any image you like. If you have a webcam you can even take a photo and use it.

Maybe I got the tips from the same Web site. I dunno, but I did the deeds on the very first day I had this PC. My png is 174 x 174, but so long as you name it user-32, user-40, user-48 ... Windows will use it when the small, medium, and large images are called up. Same size png in all instances. No need to resize it. (PNGs are great that way.)

Makes sense. This site is where I saw the info, and I intend to ONLY try the pics thing, and not the registry tweaks.
And I'm not gonna resize each one. I'll just try renaming them first.

I don't think that will carry over to the Settings banner to give you both images, instead of your chosen image and the little "man" icon, as Ghot shows in #26 above. Also, I think I noticed that there's a difference in chosen-image-use when you're logged in on a local account or on your MS account. Not sure. Haven't used my MSA enough to know what it does.

Believe me, it's true. Over and over and over again, when I get a client's PC running properly again, I hear the question, "Where the hell did you learn how to do all that?"

Actually the "all that" is usually not a lot.

I know in advance that I'm going to get awed responses to even minor adjustments when I start a service call with "Tell me a little bit about your maintenance routine for this machine," and the response is "My WHAT?" :oops: :mad::sick:

I think the one on the left is taken from "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures" user-32 or user-40.

Hello, I just installed Windows 11 on an unsupported Lenovo G50-45 laptop (AMD E1-6010, 4GB RAM). This had a Windows 8 core key in BIOS, so Setup automatically installed Windows 11 Home. At the network screen the old trick of pressing Alt+F4 to close it and proceed with a local account didn't work. So I did the other trick, I pressed Shift+F10 to open a command prompt and run taskmgr to open Task Manager. I then went to the Details tab, located the process oobenetworkinstall (or similar), highlighted it and clicked End Task to close it. Setup proceeded asking for a local account!
