A 14GB thumb drive can be a very useful.
Any recommendations on reviving this, and a bunch of other, drives like this one?

Yeah, format it to NTFS not Fat32.

Don’t forget, if you format a drive everything on it gets deleted.



So copy any files to another location first

Most USB Thumb drives come factory formatted as FAT32, all mine up to 256GB did. The downside is FAT32 is limited to 32GB drives/partitions and 4GB Single-file size. I'd probably format as exFAT or NTFS to get around the limits. Mac OS X can read NTFS but not write to it without another app installed. I use a program called GPARTED on my Linux computer to format FAT32 on larger drives or reformat Thumb drives, have done 500GB and Windows can use it, but the file size can be an issue.

Berton is quite right, I stand defeated.

exFAT or NTFS (6 of one or half a dozen of the other).
I just do NTFS because I can’t tell the difference (I certainly don’t sit around running performance tests on a USB) and there is no way anything I own is going into a Mac (which exFAT is fully compatible with). I’d rather get covid.

If you ever decide to write another book, at least you’ll know that when you send the manuscript/draft (if that’s what it’s called) into a publisher on an exFAT USB, they’ll be able to make notes on it because they probably all use Macs (because they’re snobs?)

I agree with the advice to format with a different file system, but the above isn’t true. That’s a limit of the Windows format utility (in the GUI). If you use command prompt or PowerShell, you can format the whole drive. FAT32 volumes can be 16 TB in theory, but 8 TB is the practical limit.

Again though, I agree with the different file system advice.

EaseUS Partition Master can do it also.

Well, the version I have, can.

I just double checked to make sure.
I just formatted a 256GB USB stick as FAT32

I have sometimes revived a thumb drive by COMPLETELY wiping the drive in diskpart.

To do this, run diskpart, select the correct disk, run a "clean /all". Note that this can take a while if the disk is slow.

I have to say. I wouldn’t be trusting a USB stick with a PST Data file that you seem to deem so important. USB Thumb drives are known to be unreliable at times and can be prone to dying at random. Especially a data file that is 10GB.

Yes. as well as the ost files associated with imap accounts. (Obviously this doesn't relate to the thumb drives discussed here. I think to confuse a thumb drive with a SSD or NVMe (see thread SSD's lower prices When? - though I probably will be breaking it out into a more detailed discussion of NVMe)

(Again re SSD's lower prices When?) I'm expecting that by using a fast external drive to QUICKLY Image my three computers that I can stay away from Backup programs (and simplify this bureaucratic task) completely.

That backup addin hardly leaves a footprint as is the most simplified process you could use. It’s foolish if you think you shouldn’t back the PST up. Simply having it LIVE on an external drive isn’t enough. Always backup files to a separate drive to which they exist.
