Touchpad driver

After having returned three laptops (all of them HP!) over the last 10 years due to their reliance upon Microsoft's Touchpad driver, I would be interested in knowing whether MS has even directed its attention to its dismal driver.

Background: By pre-empting manufacturers' touchpad drivers for their "generic" driver, touchpads from Synaptics and others sometimes do not work properly. The biggest flaw is the bounce-back (jumping back up a page or two after doing a two-finger scroll down). Makes the trackpad useless. As noted above, I've purchased and then returned three HP laptops with Synaptics touchpads (which is crazy because Synaptics is who Apple uses for their MacBooks!). I had a Dell, an Asus, and I write this now from my LG (sorry; don't remember the touchpad vendor but it's not Synaptics).

I've had to use some registry hacks to fix the inertia (which should be a setting in MS's driver but is not).

It would be easy to rectify this situation but for two poor choices:
1. The touchpad vendors will not provide the proper driver when MS "claims the territory".
2. Even if you find a working driver from another device, Windows will overwrite the driver with its own.

There’s the Microsoft Precision touchpad driver but suspect this may be the same as you’re referring to - unless you mean Microsoft’s basic driver for mouse.
I’ll leave this here just in case:
How to install Precision Touchpad Drivers on Windows 10 Hopefully this still works with Win 11.

Yeah; that's the miscreant. In typical Microsoft double-speak, they call it "Precision" when it is anything but.

As noted above, I managed to hack the registry in my LG 13Z990 (through some advice a Google search yielded) and it now performs beautifully. But I will stress that the bounce-back I encountered with Synaptics touchpads isn't present in the LG (which might be an Elan pad).

I'll have to do a hands-on with the next laptop I buy so I don't get unpleasantly surprised. Luckily, the last HP was bought at Costco (online) and it was easy-peasy to return it and buy the LG.

Most likely HP do use the Elan touchpad. I hope there’s a workaround for non LG laptops.

My last one (that I returned) had a Ryzen 7, Vega graphics, and a Synaptics trackpad (absolutely sure). Other than the trackpad, the performance was stellar. But I wasn't going to resign myself to using a mouse (which I would have had to do in order to be productive). *sigh*
This is the one I bought (and returned) last June:

...and I replaced it with this:

Except for the trackpad, the HP was a superior product...but the trackpad made it unusable.

I believe I should’ve written Synaptics rather than Elan. It was a long time ago that I used any HP laptop.
Needed more :coffee:

Hi there
@Bastet

If you've a working W10 system or even a Macrium image - browse to directory (on the W10 system or the macrium image) C:\windows\system32\driverstore. Now go to device manager (on W11 of course) and choose update driver. Choose searchthis PC and choose the directory I've listed. Ensure include sub folders is checked.

Unless the hardware is brand spanking new the W10 driver should install without fuss. (Use the most recent W10 version of course).

Cheers

So what you're implying is that W11 no longer follows W10's behavior to overwrite the non-precision touchpad driver. Verdad?

Of course, we're assuming that the native driver can even be found at the vendor's site. In the case of the HP I owned, no native driver was available at HP nor did Synaptics make one available at their site. Hence, the "Precision" drive was the only one available...and it didn't work properly.

I usually do not install touchpad driver (but get that from WU anyway),, I'm using mickey mouse 99%. Besides , on w8.1, windows did it go badly
for drivers for touchpad, control panel thing,, which I have to use to sort things out. And then not to install drivers per automatic.

On my desktop machine, I use a mouse and a tablet (in reduced area, absolute mode for navigation, not drawing).

On my laptops, if the touchpad doesn't work perfectly out of the box, it's a defective machine and gets returned. HP (or whoever) has the responsibility to ship a properly working machine or they get it back. In the context of this thread, that means Microsoft's Precision Touchpad Driver. I can't send the HP "back to Microsoft". It's a Synaptics/HP/Microsoft clusterf--k.
