Solved Trying to load win 11 usb keeps failing

I have downloaded Windows 11 to usb to put on a laptop dell 5410. It starts ok but when it gets to putting info on SSD it tells me it cannot do I do not seem to be able to it because it is a GPT and it should be a GPD . I have never heard of this is it new. how do I get to setup win11. I have looked to see if I can find out how to change to GPD but cannot find anything.

I can see that the Dell 5410 has a tenth gen CPU, so that's good.
How did you make or where did you get the Windows 11 ISO?

Did you use the Media Creation Tool... or maybe RUFUS?





All I can find on GPD, is GPD Win 3/4/5... which is either an OS or a Gaming Handheld itself.

When you get the error message, you should take a picture with your mobile phone or camera and post it here.

Reset BIOS or load defaults.
Set Disk mode to AHCI, not RAID
Select OS mode = UEFI
Disable fast boot and secure boot (you can turn it on after installation)

Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

As you have a UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.

During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name) to install as UEFI-GPT.
Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the main drive till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.

I got the download from Microsoft site it is their download not Rufus

Then I would remake the USB install media using the Media Creation Tool (MCT), and try again.


Option One, here...

Let MCT create the Win 11 USB installation drive.
If you download the Win 11 iso installation file you have to split sources\Install.wim into smaller Install.swm files so they can fit on a Fat32 USB drive. (if you use install.wim and NTFS it won't boot as UEFI, only as Legacy)

I guess you created a GPT USB flash drive and you try to install Windows on an MBR partitioned disk without deleting all partitions first. If this is a clean installation and you don't care about the previous contents, just delete ALL partitions until the whole disk is unallocated. Setup will convert the disk to GPT automatically and proceed. If for some reason you don't want to convert the disk to GPT, you CANNOT install Windows using a GPT USB flash drive on an MBR disk. You must create a new USB flash drive as MBR to do that. Some might ask why one would want to keep the existing partition. A good reason is to save you time backing up all the data. If you try to install Windows on an existing Windows partition, Setup will warn you there is already a Windows system on the disk and it will be copied to Windows.old folder. Exactly! So you can then find all your data at folder C:\Windows.old\Users\username Also should any application has any data you want to copy, you can navigate to the respective folder and copy them. For example, if you copy ALL Mozilla folders from Windows.old in their respective location in the new system BEFORE installing Firefox, the installer will think you already have Firefox and ask you to upgrade. This means that you keep all your bookmarks, themes and settings! No bad! It might also work for other applications.

Many thanks for your suggestion I did try them but it kept coming up with same problem. I then had a brainstorm I had a pc with only win10 on it. I added macrium to it and cloned SSD to it then put SSD back in my laptop and then updated to win 11. My laptop is now working as it should.

Good old workaround since Windows XP. If you cannot install latest Windows version directly, just install an earlier version and upgrade. Same with XP and XP SP3, Vista and 7, 8 and 8.1, 10 and 11.
