Time and Language Turn On or Off Show Touch Keyboard when No Keyboard Attached in Windows 11

Touch_keyboard_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off show the touch keyboard when there's no keyboard attached for your account in Windows 11.

Windows 11 includes a touch keyboard you can click/tap on to enter text. This can be handy if you have a PC with a touchscreen without a physical keyboard.

You can turn on or off to automatically show the touch keyboard when there's no keyboard attached. If turned on, just tap where you’d like to enter text and the touch keyboard will pop up.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1928, Microsoft is trying out a new touch keyboard setting that replaces the “Show the touch keyboard when there’s no keyboard attached” checkbox with a new dropdown menu with 3 options to control whether tapping an edit control should launch the touch keyboard:
  • Never suppresses the touch keyboard even when no hardware keyboard is attached.
  • When no keyboard attached will show the touch keyboard only when the device is used as a tablet without the hardware keyboard.
  • Always will show the touch keyboard even when the hardware keyboard is attached.
Reference:

Show the touch keyboard when there's no keyboard attached is turned on by default for tablet devices.

Show the touch keyboard when there's no keyboard attached is turned off by default for desktop and laptop devices.

Hello El Capitan, and welcome. :-)

Does your device support touch?

Thanks! Don't think so. It's a desktop setup.

But I don't plan on using touch. I plan on just using a mouse

Ah, no worries then. You shouldn't be bothered by it.

But I am bothered. I need these settings bc I don't plan on using a keyboard. Only a virtual keyboard.

Currently I use macros on my mouse to pop-up the keyboard, but it would be so much easier if I didn't have to do that.

If wanted, you could have the Touch Keyboard icon show on the taskbar corner area to help make it easier to open and use as needed.

Thanks but that's not the solution I'm looking for. Maybe a driver or a script...but I'm not computer savvy. Oh well, the search continues

Unfortunately, this did not work for me with build 22621. So, to try a newer version I joined the insider program and enabled beta releases. Build version is now 22624. Now, registry edit is working - it is indeed disabling touch keyboard! But the insider program requires one to enable optional diagnostic data being sent to Microsoft... which includes browsing activity. Not great to say the least.
