type "cmd" in start does not run CMD, but shutdown?!

This is really unbelievable. For thirty years I am used to press win key, type cmd and have a command line open. But today something totally different happened! I have a file named vypniserver.cmd on my desktop and when I pressed win, "cmd" this one was highlighted and ran after pressing enter! Obviously correct behavior would be to run CMD and not some random .cmd file don't we think? Why is file extension being matched by start menu search anyway? This file is meant to switch off my home server, so imagine how "happy" I was when I saw what I did.

I suppose you can’t really just assume that cmd will be the first result, hence why we have a mouse.

If you hit Win key + R and type CMD, hit Enter, does this happen?

Try excluding the folder where vypniserver.cmd lives, from the indexing service.

• Open the Indexing Options (search for it in Start).
• Click Modify.
• Uncheck the folder where vypniserver.cmd is saved.
• Click OK.

Then reset & rebuilt indexing.

This looks like it is a VPN that starts from the Command Prompt. Did you install a VPN?
Typing CMD and clicking Enter would restart the computer into a VPN.

In the search bar type command and see what you get or
Move the Blue selector to Aplkace (application) before typing CMD and see what you get.

I read English in that post. (Unless it was edited) We can’t expect people to change the language their OS is using so we can read an image. Some images are just obvious though.

which part of my message is not in english?? Where do you see VPN? I clearly explained that this cmd file is mean to shutdown my home server. It contains shutdown command. How is this related to VPN I don't know.

If I type "command" in start then it shows Total Commander which I have installed (with a real legit license BTW!)

What is the point of having a win key on the keyboard if I had to use the mouse then? Of course I want to be effective and use keyboard shortcuts as much as possible without unnecessary mouse action. The file was on the desktop.
Funny thing is that now I have moved the file somewhere else and made a shortcut for it on the desktop and when I press win and type cmd, the command line gets highlighted correctly and the file is listed under it! Even when I have put back the file itself it is now correct. This computer is playing jokes on me

Nope.

vypniserver.cmd is possibly located somewhere that's indexed with a higher priority in Windows Search than the actual Command Prompt (cmd.exe).
Perhaps it’s due to Windows identifying it as a priority choice, something you use all the time.

All you’re doing by hitting the win key and typing cmd, is utilising Windows search feature. There is nothing to say it is supposed to open and exe before any other file.
That is what Win + R is (Run) typing cmd into Run and hitting enter will open cmd.

Not funny at all.
Because for the time being, Windows hasn’t indexed vypniserver.cmd yet.

This is why I suggested to try the following.

@McVitas When I type in CMD, the following items are listed along with CMD itself as a fourth option. The best match is a shortcut of SFC /SCANNOW titled Check System Files.

Maybe you should look into Search Indexing Options and make necessary changes in there. Just a thought.

For this, please open Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items (Small Icons) -> Indexing Options -> Advanced -> File Types. You must look into file types and check/uncheck the ones you want to add or remove. You must also check which drives have checkboxes checked.

You can rename this file to vypniserver.bat, and Windows Search will stop promoting it as the top match.
