this is what google ai says

Yes, you can usually still use a computer with a dead CMOS battery, but it will cause annoyances like losing the correct date and time and resetting BIOS settings (boot order, overclocking) every time you shut down; sometimes, on older or specific motherboards, it can even prevent the PC from booting at all, showing errors like "CMOS checksum error" or "Time & Date Not Set". The PC should function otherwise, but you'll need to reconfigure settings after each power cycle. so it looks like yes but I am still unsure if anything else will happen

A computer with a dead CMOS battery is usable. But if you turn off the power, it loses track of BIOS settings and the clock. It's just super annoying to check the BIOS settings are correct, and fixing the time every time you power on.

So don't turn off the power, or remember to check the settings every time you power on.

If you don't remember to fix the clock, then Windows starts getting really confused and no secure website will allow you to browse https:// because the date is wrong.

Short answer: Don't turn off the computer, until you have time to buy a new CMOS battery.

watch what he does or better yet ask him to tell you what to do. It is quite easy when you know how.

Your BIOS should already be at defaults. You should listen to your brother. Time should be automatically adjusted. But who knows.

Once you replace the CMOS battery, when you boot up for the first time, you will get a message that time and date are incorrect press whatever key to boot into Setup (Bios) and adjust the time and date and you can also choose Load Optimized Defaults.

Once the Computer loads Windows and is online to the internet, the Clock should Sync with the Windows time server, if you are in the Right Region.
You can check this by going to Search and type Region Choose Change Country or Region. Make sure you are in the proper region and the time is correct.

Make sure you are in the proper region and the time is correct.
my brother says to just replace the cmos battery and don't do anything else but he us going to put it in for me

You have to have the correct time and date in the BIOS or many really weird things will happen. ^^
