Solved Unable to install update (KB5018418)

Hold on! I'm trying some things myself... Don't do a repair install yet. I'll let you know what I find. I have the time today and I'm determined to squash this issue. TODAY. 😎
Ok i can wait

Also... I don't see anywhere that you tried running DISM. Just to be sure... Run the following from a command line to make sure you don't have any other problems: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth. It won't change anything; it will just report if your installation is healthy or not. 😉

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth does a very thorough scan. It also doesn't change anything. Just reports on any potential corruption. 😎
EDIT: But if the first quick scan came up good, you're likely fine. 😉

On the off chance that you DO have errors, use the following to attempt to fix them: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
For more information about using DISM check out How to use DISM to repair local image on Windows 11.

(I'm actually waiting for something to finish installing/scanning, so as things pop in my head I'm posting them. 😎🤘☮️)

Installing cumulatives has been an issue for a lot of folks since spring. You said you performed sfc /scannow. Did it fix everything it found?

1. reset windows update components Reset Windows Update in Windows 11 Tutorial
2. disable Malwarebytes or any other third party AV. I make sure it is disabled every single update Tuesday when I know a cumulative will be released..
3. Install manually using the update you downloaded.

If that doesn't work perform a repair install with an inplace upgrade. Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial

Do you have Malwarebytes?
It currently has known problems with causing Windows Updates on Windows 11 to fail.
While MB has been an issue on some machines this problem goes beyond that and is pretty elusive. In my case, I essentially did a complete Reset which wipes out all the apps from the machine thinking it was related to some incompatible app that was the cause of the problem. I then attempted to install KB5018418 and I still encountered the endless spinning wheel after 30% restart. My suspicion is that it's related to some system driver even though they all check out as being current. If new builds of Windows can't even install on hardware which was previously fine with older build then it has to be some new security feature that they've added that's screwing things up. The standard SFC, DISM, WU Reset, removing MB etc. made no difference for me. MS is supposedly aware of this ongoing problem and so far hasn't been able to provide a fix in these monthly updates. Pretty frustrating.

I'm currently working on a machine now that has this problem. With one machine, removing Malwarebytes fixed it. But with this one it did not.
I don't know a solution yet. With this one, the installation is not progressing further than 0% (When Malwarebytes was the conflict, it progressed to 90+% after several reboots and then reverted everything, again with several reboots.

This machine fails at 0% after the restart.

To give you a little background my problem started with KB5016629 which came out in early August. That's when I decided to go back to KB5015882 July 21 update, and that went in fine with no issues whatsoever and even with MB running and doing nothing special. All subsequent Cumulative Updates since KB5016629 have an installation issue with my hardware. I have a Gigabyte Z390 UD Rev 1.1 with F10 Bios and haven't done anything to the system since when it was working. I have made multiple Macrium backups and tried different scenarios with the same result. I am convinced that there's some code that was added in August around the time KB5012170 Security Boot patch was issued and that is in all these new Cum Updates including new ISOs that you download from MS. This code is not working with some hardware configurations and that's the best conclusion I can come up with after months of troubleshooting. Sounds like we just have to wait for MS to come up with a universal fix because what works for some may not work for others.

I watched this video and all repair options failed. I had to go for an in-place upgrade with the Windows media creation tool.

Now KB5018427 installed correctly. It's a pity that problems like these take so much time to diagnose and solve.

Well, I did some things and now the KB5018418 isn't showing up in the update list. I also tried to install it manually and the installer says that it's not applicable which lends credence to it already being installed. I think what may have been happening is that it may have actually installed before but just wasn't being removed from the list. (A total guess on my part, so don't quote me.) We'll see tomorrow if it still isn't there. It's late and I'm tired. Have to eat and then hit the bed! BUT! I did the following things which may have reset something and set things right...

1) I installed and ran the Windows 11 Installation Assistant found here.

2) I then created a .bat file by pasting the following into a text file, saving it with the extension .bat, and then running it. It took a LONG time for me. Here is the text for the file:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto

net stop bits

net stop wuauserv

net stop msiserver

net stop cryptsvc

net stop appidsvc

Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

regsvr32.exe /s atl.dll

regsvr32.exe /s urlmon.dl

regsvr32.exe /s mshtml.dll

netsh winsock reset

netsh winsock reset proxy

rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanHealth

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /CheckHealth

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup

Sfc /ScanNow

net start bits

net start wuauserv

net start msiserver

net start cryptsvc

net start appidsvc

Remember to make sure that the file extension is .bat (you can just rename it if you didn't save it that way; just tack a .bat on the end) and then run it. Like I said, it took a while for me for some reason. It was SFC /ScanNow that was taking so long even though I had ran it before. Might have had something to do with one of the services that it stops. Whatever the case, even if you already ran SFC, just let it run because, again, I'm not sure which of the above things did the trick or if it was both. So if you want to follow everything I did exactly, just let it do its thing. 😎

At any rate, I'll know tomorrow if everything is 100%. I'll post back yea or nay... (Hopefully yea!) Have a good night, everybody! And good luck! 😉

Hello

Can you do the following please:

Open the Windows Explorer and then navigate to: C:\Windows\logs.

Then copy and paste the Folder with the name: CBS to your desktop.

Afterwards zip the folder and then upload it on OneDrive, Google Drive or another File Hoster and share the link here please.

It appears that your update brought your machine to 22H2 build which is the new version. Sounds like your upgrade was an entire OS upgrade. Did you do a complete in-place upgrade install or just chose to do the KB5018418 upgrade? I wonder if they've fixed the issue.

Hi all i did was the computer said it needed to restart to complete critical updates so i just clicked on restart.

I did not select anything at all except the restart now. so if it was a complete new windows 11 it did it by itself i thought it was just a normal update but it did take a long time.

But now my computer runs a lot faster now and no more asking for the KB5018418

Thanks for the info, sounds like MS is forcing the complete install to overcome whatever issue they are having. How long did the whole process take for you? I'll make a back up just in case before doing this so I can revert back if something happens.

Interesting that your update was from 21H2 to 22H2 via automatic updates. I am only getting KB5018418 as the updates available and I've had to hide it and prevent it from installing because it fails. I may try an in-place upgrade with manual 22H2 download from MS to see if something changed.
