I think I am screwed.
I upgraded my PC, changed motherboard and installed temporary new CPU while the original one is up for warranty check, and now Windows won't activate.

I never used a Microsoft account (thought I do have one), certainly not for logging into Windows (I'm not crazy to give them my personal information), so the digital licence is not tied to the account (I presume), so I can't use any past device to activate the "new hardware".

Running the troubleshooter gives me bullshit info about having to install Windows Home while my licence is Pro.

Trying to enter my product key results in another bullshit error:

I just don't know what to do.
Logging into Microsoft account is a horrible experience by itself. Nothing makes sense. It even wants to send me some verification codes to an address I removed from the account months ago. Holy crap.

Hell no! I bought my licence back in 2009 retail for an obscene sum of money, no way I'm buying it again just because Microsoft are a bunch if idiots.

I could still completely disassemble my PC, put the old motherboard in, but then what would I even do to transfer the licence or something?

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
But this is not legitimate key, none of these websites sell legit stuff. They are either stolen or generated from some volume licence something, and the internet is full of them.

When I was in this situation a while back, I rang Microsoft up and gave them details of my original order for Microsoft Windows retail, and they set it up remotely. However, you need to have the order number etc. which you received when you bought Windows.

But that's 16 years ago and has served you well. I was suggesting the most stress free way of fixing your problem by buying a retail licence which can be ransferred if needed in future. It's your call, but I'd pay the £50 and the problem goes away. Good luck.

This is all so shoveled up it basically ruined my day.
Microsoft in their infinite stupidity also removed phone activation, so my perfectly legal and working key is most likely permanently lost.

I too had the problem activating my license when I traded out my motherboard for a new motherboard, new CPU and all new DDR5 memory. I couldn't get MS to activate my purchased Windows 11 Pro license. I too believe in using legitimately licensed software. I don't feel that purchasing a license key from Stack Social is wrong though. Stack Social has been around for a very long time and if what they did was supply illegal product keys they'd have been shut down years ago. When I had this problem I paid ~$10 and was back in business in 15 minutes. If Microsoft activates with the key then I feel OK about it. Your call.........

If this license was bought back in 2007, you have a Windows XP or Vista license key. These won't work in latest Windows versions. Reading the license agreement, there is not much you can do, except buying a new license. MS has been kind enough to give you a free ride for almost 20 years, which they haven't really been obliged to do.

As mentioned before, either buy a key straight from MS, grab a cheap key from these grey area online shops or forget Windows all together and install Linux and you never have to worry about any license keys ever again.

Have you tried Windows activation troubleshooter, by the way?

Running the troubleshooter gives me bullshit info about having to install Windows Home while my licence is Pro.
That can happen if the motherboard you put in had been used previously and had been activated with Windows 10 or 11 Home. If so it would have a digital licence for 10/11 Home stored on Microsoft's activation servers, which the Troubleshooter would have found.

1768052233452.webp

Hell no! I bought my licence back in 2009 retail for an obscene sum of money, no way I'm buying it again just because Microsoft are a bunch if idiots.
A 2009 licence would have been for Windows 7. While that would have been entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10 (and from that to 11) Microsoft finally removed free activation for W7/W8 licences in 2023.

I could still completely disassemble my PC, put the old motherboard in, but then what would I even do to transfer the licence or something?
You could switch the old PC to sign in with a Microsoft account. This would link its digital licence to your MS account. The Activation Troubleshooter would then be able to transfer the old PC's activation to the new one.

Bree said:
As long as you are using a Microsoft account it's quite straight forward. I've had to use the Activation Troubleshooter a couple of times now. Just run it and tell it you've changed hardware, then it asks you to sign into your MS account and point to the old hardware.

You throw a lot of biased assumption around void of any facts - at people who try to help you - by giving valid/proven solutions. If you already know all the answers - why even bother making a topic?

If you change the hardware - the License Key gets deactivated, that was always the case "for decades". It's not some new policy or a Windows error. Usually, it's enough to call Microsoft's support line...

And they'll reactivate it. Did this dozens of times - while fixing a system for a client which involved changing a broken component. Even with OEM keys - which some might deem questionable (know it all online users) - while replacing hardware - and never had any issues with Microsoft support line. If your key is legit (even if bought at a major discount - like those 10$ deals, 9/10 they work - and if not they usually replace it with a working key) - the support line never fails.

There no official Microsoft representatives on this forum - to be able to help with reactivating keys, only advices based on shared/personal experiences.

If this license was bought back in 2007, you have a Windows XP or Vista license key. These won't work in latest Windows versions.
I know what I bought (I even still have the box somewhere).
No, it’s not “perfectly legal” you violated the contract terms by trying to use in a different Windows version and/or different hardware.
Oh boy. Then why Microsoft themselves asked people to upgrade for free to every new major Windows version wth the same key?

No idea what are you trying to achieve here. Do you think I haven't seen the "activation portal" yet? The activation by phone was removed by those retards in december, removing the last working way of getting situation like this resolved.

Microsoft basically ripped me off €200 (or whatever the RETAIL BOX licence cost back then) and I am rightfully pissed.

16 years in the computer world might as well have been a century ago.

Well I guess that's it, then.

I think after 16 years of use, you got your money's worth. You can't rely on things to go on into perpetuity, you know...

My suggestion would be to do what wiganken mentioned in post#2, which is a lot cheaper than than what you payed for it back then. That way the new retail license should be good to go for many years to come.

No. They didn’t. You rent Windows, you don’t own it. Even €200 / 16yr = €12.5/yr. I’ve lost time worth more than that by reading this thread.

I'd just buy the $10 key from Stack Social. Tons of folks here have purchased from them, including me. I've never had a problem, and I get a valid Retail key, not a volume license or OEM key. As others have stated, any key you got in 2009 isn't likely to be valid for Windows 11 in 2026!

Hell no! I bought my licence back in 2009 retail for an obscene sum of money, no way I'm buying it again just because Microsoft are a bunch if idiots.

I could still completely disassemble my PC, put the old motherboard in, but then what would I even do to transfer the licence or something?
The previous activation is linked to the old motherboard. In theory if you put the old mobo in it should activate the os when you go online.
