Unactivated Windows 11 systems could soon block access to Microsoft Edge settings

Microsoft is testing new activation related restrictions on Windows 11 currently that affect the system's integrated Microsoft Edge browser.

Windows 11 can be installed without a product key. This leaves the operating system in an unactivated state. While the system works fine for the most part, it does display reminders and a watermark, and does prevent access to certain personalization options, such as setting wallpapers (there is a way around that).

Activate Windows


Windows 11 works fine in most areas. You can install programs, use the Microsoft Store, update the operating system, or make administrative changes.

Soon, Microsoft may block access to some Microsoft Edge settings however.

Oh dear, another wannabe journalist posts thatare so inaccurate.

1) You do not get a watermark if unactivated - been years since it did that.

2) it never nags you about pc being unactivated.

3) the only restrictions are some personalisation settings.

Anyway, posts complaining about any new restrictions if unactivated are ridiculous.

It is a requirememt of the EULA to have a valid licence.

Why should people too tight to buy a licence get all the benefits that a valid licence holder gets!

Anyway, it seems crazy to me that MS would put restrictions on Edge when you could install Chrome, Firefox etc. I agree with @Winuser - surely this is shooting yourself in the foot/

I agree. Protecting ones brand and ones revenue is totally justified. Why wouldn’t you? One rule for all, big business and small alike.
If Joe Blow had a small business and people were messing with his brand and pirating his software, how do you think he would fare? I invested in a guys accounting software in Australia and it got pirated and passed around like a bowl of peanuts. He lost everything, I lost my investment.
This is why I jot around in here scolding anyone who even suggests it. Unethical, damaging. Doesn’t matter if it’s Microsoft, Apple or Joe Blow.

If you choose to use any piece of software, as either a trial version, unactivated or pirated copy, then you have NO right to complain about what the owner stipulates the software can and can NOT do if you will NOT comply with the legal requirements for a fully working version can do.
