Update KB5044380 Breaks Custom Folder icons

Before this update I was able to use the software Customizer God to make a tweak on Windows Folder icons so that they showed an entire thumbnail instead of the annoying half window that is normal. However, when this update is installed, the folders are reverted to standard. If you try to fix it every icon and thumbnail in windows disappears. The only fix is to go back to a previous restore point.

I realize Customizer God is a very ancient piece of software and it's possible it's screwing things up. Is there a better way to do the same thing? I know the icon is stored in C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll but I don't know of another way to swap the icons. I have read that Resource Hacker can do it, but can't find any instructions, and it sounds dangerous.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I use no 3rd party app so I can not speak for CustomizerGod. I do notice when I try to change the icon for one of my pictures folders, it says "You can change the folder icon, but if you change the folder icon, it will no longer show a preview of the folders's contents." Standard Windows folder icon show thumbnails for all my pictures folders just fine.

Things to try:
Check these settings. Change the Windows 11 folder view style. Right-click within a folder and select View > Tiles or Content to enable icon thumbnails.
Note: List and Details options will shrink your icons to a size that’s too small for Windows 11 thumbnails to work.
Enable Windows 11 thumbnails. Open File Explorer, select the three-dot menu at the top of the window, then go to Options > View, and make sure Always show icons, never thumbnails is deselected. Having this option enabled will turn off thumbnails and replace them with generic file type icons.

Since some Windows 10 v1903 the system icons are held in C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun However if you try to replace the icons directly with Customizer God you get an error due to access rights. You must copy the file in another folder, such as C:\temp, modify it and then change the access rights to copy back. You must right-click on the SystemResources, select Properties and go to Security tab. Select Advanced and then go to Owners. Change owner to Administrators (the group) and click OK to take effect. Then go to Advanced again click to charge settings and check all the boxes to grant full access to Administrators (the group). Then click OK untill you close all open settings. Then open the folder and right-click on the file imageres.dll.mun and repeat the above procedure to grant full access to Administrators (the group). Now you must replace the file while File Explorer is not running and using it. I use Command Prompt as Administrator. I first load Command Prompt and then go to Task Manager, details and end task explorer. In Command Prompt I type this code:
Code:
C:
cd \
cd Windows
cd SystemResources
ren imageres.dll.mun imageres.dll.mun.old
copy C:\temp\imageres.dll.mun .
explorer
exit
