My test laptop (1st system specs) runs Windows 11 23H2 with the same performance as Windows 7 64-bit (reasonably fast) and is more than enough for my 5 year old to play some simple games. I don't need anything faster.

Are these recurrent in place upgrade repairs?


If an in place upgrade fails on an unsupported upgrade I'm wondering whether the unsupported is something that in most cases can be ignored or whether the unsupported blocks the upgrade. Can a custom install be a backup plan?

Lately I discovered some issues with multiple disks. Once you disconnect all the other disks leaving only the Windows disk the upgrade completes successfully. Of course you still have to disconnect from the internet, just in case, because 9 in 10 times the upgrade fails at 75% of the first stage (before the first restart) probably due to some hidden compatibility check in the background.

An update......I now have the 24h2 iso file on a flash drive, created using RUFUS......I am now having the same problem as before, when trying to upgrade from W10 to W11.......the machine won't boot from the flash drive.....this time it says "invalid partition table".......any suggestions welcomed......

I thought you wanted to upgrade to 24H2, not do a clean install.

If you boot from the USB you can only do a clean install. To start upgrading your 23H2 just plug in the Rufus-prepared USB and run the Setup.exe you'll find there.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
AH....as you have probably gathered, I am not that computer literate.......but I do see what you mean......work in progress.......thank you.....EDIT.....I thought I had formatted the flash drive wrongly as GPT instead of MBR.....

Can I just suggest you copy and paste any files from it onto an exernal usb and also make a system image of it on 23H2 before attempting to upgrade? :-) I think what I would do is

1) Make a system image
2) Try clean installing Windows 11 from the bootable rufus usb - then if it works good, and if it doesn't you restore your 23H2 image. For now at least.

Maybe someone else can help with the partitioning issue. If it was me I would wipe the drive first and then install 24H2 (clean of partitions). You can still restore an image of 23H2 afterwards.

If booting is a problem then after making the system image you could try the inplace upgrade suggested above.

Reboot to the boot menu, by pressing F10, or F11, or F12, or ESC..., whatever it may be, repeatedly, then choose the flash drive, then Enter...

So when the machine is off. Put the flash drive in, switch on and at the same time, hit the escape key repeatedly - a boot menu should come up. That usually works on most machines I find.

I cheat, I do a search so I know what the Boot Menu key is so I don't have to keep guessing. It's all over the map for different makers. :LOL:

To upgrade from 23H2 just connect the USB flash drive you created with Rufus and start Setup. The format GPT or MBR mskes no difference since you run it from Windows, you don't boot from it. If you want to do a clean installation (format) instead, then boot from it. Restart the Dell computer and press F12 many times until you see the Boot menu. Select the USB flash drive and proceed. Assuming you have a backup of your data, when you see the screen with the available partitions, delete them all and leave the whole disk unallocated. Then click on Next to begin.

With my own laptops I can just never remember and can't be bothered to look it up so I just hit escape :LOL: Because it's quicker than looking it up. I've had various different ones and they're all different and I just can't remember from one week to the next even after looking it up. However I do remember that the Eee Pc is F2!

F2 is to load BIOS in most laptops, ESC is to see a list of selections but doesn't work for all laptops, F12 is for Boot menu in most laptops, F9 is for Boot menu in HP and F10 is for BIOS in HP. On desktop motherboards, it is either DEL or F2 to load BIOS, F8 or F11 or F12 to see the Boot menu (depends on manufacturer), F9 to see Boot menu in HP and F10 to load BIOS in HP.

You're right - you see I forgot again :LOL: Whereas I know escape brings up the options and I can select the boot manager from there.

Well, it's not gonna work.......it must be that CPU/SSE thing, or lack of it.........I will stick with 23h2 until November, and then see what happens.....thanks to all who tried to help........

I think it was mentioned before, that one option would be to install Windows 10 on it and get the extended support update - then it will last until October 2026 on windows 10 :-)

I would run that little program mentioned earlier in this thread (post 2), to definitely know whether you have sse4.2 or not. Before deciding.
