Thanks for that......that might be the best idea......I see that the cost of extended support for W10 is 30 dollars, so about £22 in England......I will run that program just to check, but I think this laptop is just too old........Many thanks again......EDIT....actually if you don't want to pay for the W10 extension, there are ways to get it for FREE !!

In my opinion, this is a disservice to ordinary end users who have no idea what they are purchasing.

As far as I've seen, Del 80 hasn't made the details of the laptop clear enough. I think it has a Gen2 or Gen3 Intel CPU.

It almost certainly has the SSE4.2/POPCNT instructions that it would need to run 24H2.

I've been a bit harsh with "Del 80". When he (she?) mentioned that he bought a used laptop with 23H2 pre-installed, I had to change my opinion about what was going on.

I hope that he can eventually make one of the upgrade (to 24H2) methods work. Or that he can get some in-person help. Not everyone is a PC/Windows enthusiast.

Yes you can get it free if you have 1000 microsoft reward points (which are quite easy to get). It sounds like your machine might be suitable to run 24H2 so why not try the inplace upgrade over 23H2 mentioned earlier? (Rather than trying to boot from usb) after running that programme to definitively check it has sse4.2.

For really old computers without SSE4.2 you can either install Windows 10 and get ESU or stick with Windows 11 23H2 and an updated antivirus. You can get ESU up to 3 times, so you have extended security updates up to 2028. It might also be another 3 years extension up to 2031. If you stick with Windows 11 23H2 Windows Defender will receive definition updates regularly, much like Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 is still receiving today. Or you can install a third-party antivirus and keep it updated. For all those computers with SSE4.2 that can be upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 and then to 25H2, I strongly recommend to do that to have the most modern Windows version for best compatibility with new hardware and software. Each version of Windows 11 has 2 years support from the date they are generally available. So upgrading to 25H2 you get up to 2027. If you can also upgrade to 26H2, you will get up to 2028 and so on. The good news is that 25H2 has the same hardware requirements as 24H2, so all unsupported computers with SSE4.2 instructions can be upgraded at least to 25H2 and have support at least up to 2027. This is enough time to plan a replacement in case we cannot upgrade to 26H2.

No, MS are not asking for $30 worth of Reward points (1,000 points has a nominal value of $1 when donated to non-profits). They're effectively giving it away for just 1,000 points. But you don't even need that, you can (and I did) qualify for free ESU just by syncing OneDrive.

I didn't know that detail. I thought Enterprise version has longer support than ESU, so it is not eligible. However, still 1 year is better than nothing. Then just keep Windows Defender or third-party antivirus updated and you can keep using Windows 10 as long as the existing software meets your needs or can still be updated. The same we do with XP and 7 all these years.

So it looks like you can buy a second year after the first year of ESU and probably a third or more. As long as you pay, Microsoft has no reason to stop you. If I am correct ESU for Windows 7 was 3 years, so I don't see why it wouldn't be 3 years for Windows 10 as well.

Unwanted sync of your data. I remember Microsoft Edge on my PC syncing with my laptop and loosing some of my favorites I had put on the favorites bar. Saving to OneDrive by default instead of local folders, also running out of space in OneDrive because it synced the whole PC.

At the top of the page it has a link for the consumer ESU program, for the first time ever MS have offered ESU to consumers (they never did for Win7's ESU), but only for one year of ESU.

To qualify for free ESU you just need to set up OneDrive. You don't need to backup or sync your user folders or Desktop (selected by default, but you can turn all those off) just that you have set up OneDrive.

If it is only a year without extension, I prefer trying to upgrade to Windows 11. If that is not possible, then keep Windows 10 and make sure Windows Defender is updated.

Have you updated to the latest CU yet? KB5062649 Windows 10 Cumulative Update Preview build 19045.6159 (22H2)

If not, then do so. Shortly after updating you should see the offer to enrol for ESU in Windows Update. It can take a few days before it appears, so be patient.
