Will be buying a 1TB to replace my WD 256GB SSD M.2 2280 NVME 3X4, so if I replace it with a !TB 4X4 will that make any difference in performance If I upgrade the board later it will likely support a 4X4 so that’s I’m thinking ahead. What is a good 1TB M2 drive on the market today. I know Samsung is top line but the cost is also. Now the old adage “You get what you pay for” so that is also a thought. Buy cheap & replace early. Patriot, Kingston or Crucial, WD & many others out there. Also I have 2 1TB backup drives so 1TB is likely all I need. What is the opinion of the members

The 1TB will be faster than the 256GB, just because it's a 1TB.
Speed on M.2 SSDs and even on Sata SSDs, goes up a bit, just with size.
The sweet spot seems to be about 1TB.

Google AI...

M.2 SSD speeds are primarily determined by their PCIe generation (Gen3/4/5) and NAND type rather than physical size, though larger capacity drives often have higher, more sustained speeds due to better controller utilization.

Still... I would get a Samsung...

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Yes, I would go for Gen 4 rather than Gen 3, however not Gen 5 as they run a bit hot at this point of development.

You won't notice any difference in speed unless you are a benchmark fiend.

I would choose a drive with the quality brands of at least the normal 600 TBW for 1 TB SSD drive. Less than that maybe cheap of dubious quality control, and/or QLC drives.

"Buy cheap & replace early." It is not as predictable as that, all drives may fail at random. Statistically higher failure rates in cheap dubious quality drives.

Samsung all the way. My drives are all Samsung and they are excellent. The 990 PRO would be a good choice.
