Upgraded from 16GB to 64GB RAM

I caught a good sale, so I upgraded from G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) CL14-14-14-34-2N Model F4-3200C14D-16GTZ

...to G.Skill Trident Z RGB Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin SDRAM PC4-28800 DDR4 3600 CL18-22-22-42 1.35V Dual Channel Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C18D-32GTZR

I can now open as many virtual machines as needed without running out of memory. Plus, a bonus of RGB and a bit faster RAM. :party:

Did you have any trouble getting 3600MHz @ CL18? I see that the RAM isn't on the QVL for the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula Z390.

(I don't expect that you had any problems. Just curious.)

Luckily, no problem at all. I selected to use the XMP settings optimized by ASUS in UEFI, and it used 3600MHz @ CL18 instantly.

I had 4x16 64GB 3200 CL14 @4100 MHz CL16 g.skill but switched to 2x 32 GB 64GB @ 4266 MHz CL18g.skill for a number of reasons. Lost out on some latency in the switch, but higher bandwidth and with two slots. G.skill trident-Z is very good RAM.

64GB is a sweet spot these days I use near half of the RAM for a block level persistent disk cache that I have on when I am not doing memory intensive photoshop work. The performance improvement is significant even with a top-end nvme drive (basically all programs start up at memory speeds and small OS i/o has memory latency speeds).

Very good.

I see that Gskill lists it for your MB, even if Asus did not. (Asus' testing doesn't keep up with the RAM market. That's not a criticism.)

Yeah, they can't test every RAM out there.

Yeah, VM's are the only reason that I am running more than 16GB of RAM myself. Nice choice, G.Skill is my memory of choice.

I have 16 Gb on this pc which is my most used and on the beta program. For my requirements that is plenty although another of my pc's has 32 Gb and a 5600G processor plus a faster M2 drive which is noticably faster. Thinking back to my first computer, an Atari 800XL with 64Kb of ram it highlights the speed increase and also the need to actually carefully husband recources which has dissapeared.

That reminds me of the RAM expansion module for the Commodore 64. It makes you wonder how they ran back then compared to today's systems. LOL

My BIOS allowed me to set XMP (DOCP as Assus calls it) to XMP 1 (3000MHz) and RAM frequency to 3600MHz which brought Cl down from Cl18 (XMP 3600) to Cl 16 as prescribed by XMP 3000. That brought RAM performance better than at normal settings. You may want to try same thing or change Cl and associated latency for even better performance,

But yeah... I noticed that the other day... RAM prices have dropped like a rock. ^^

Granted... the stuff I got had better timings, but still.
I got this RAM, and the best price I could find was $144 in May 2020

And today... with slightly slower timings, this RAM.
Back in May 2020 this would have cost about $90-100 ?

You could make a ram-disk and use it for caching your browser's data. Same goes for other apps - which have a temp folder for temporary storage/workload. You could even set the environment variables (Windows Temp folders) - to a ram-disk. Point being - this apps are usually among the main culprits impacting the life of an SSD (the browser alone can cache around 100 GB/monthly - or more - depends how much you use apps like YouTube). Even if not as much as using an SSD for media storage/editing. Ram doesn't deteriorate from heavy usage. Not to mention - it can help speed-up the apps in question (even tho - this days that's less visible on a fast nVme SSD - compared to an HDD).

There was a time (long ago - i suppose) - when i was thinking of getting 32 GB one day - and make a ram-disk for gaming.... Yet now.... there's games that use 250 GB fully installed.

Fortunately, the prices of SSD decreased considerably - even at a reasonable size (there was a time when a rando, 128 GB SSD was more expensive than today's 2 TB Samsung Evo 980 Pro).

Cracks me up. I have a picture (.jpg), on my HDD that's 223MB.
Saved as (.png), it's 931MB.

Here's a smaller pic... 6000 x 4000. 69MB saved as .bmp
Saved as .png (9MB), it would fill that hard drive.
"Look mom, I found a great picture. But when I saved it, the computer stopped working".
Ofc, it's saved as .jpg so I could post it.
