Solved upgraded installed 25H2 on unsupported hardware couple issues

ok, and how will this help the PC

The chipset is like the... Mayor of the motherboard. It controls everything.
It's always best to have the latest chipset drivers and the latest BIOS (non-beta).

And don't worry. The chipset drivers for Win 10 and Win 11 are identical.

I just left mine disabled.
Windows hasn't broken and nefarious hackers haven't found me. :D

I always reboot. It's easier than figuring out the bare minimum required to apply the patch.

Sometimes restarting Explorer works. Sometimes you have to sign out and back in.
But a reboot ALWAYS works.

Does turn off mean 'disabled'

So this is what you want... in the registry?

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00<br><br>[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CI\Config]<br>"VulnerableDriverBlocklistEnable"=dword:00000000

Yes and Yes.

You'll notice on the right side the value "VulnerableDriverBlocklistEnable" says "enable" at the end.
We don't want it enabled so we set it to 0 (zero)

If we want it enabled, we set it to 1 (one)

Generally 1 means ON and zero means OFF.
But sometimes MS rewords things to make them trickier. :-)

So when it's set like this... the Vulnerable Driver Block List is disabled.

screen shot image not great quality, but maybe you can still see the new drivers the top 2 are from the AMD chipset driver download. They installed fine with the reg change
1764596763432.webp

Screen shot of all the drivers installed from after the 25H2 upgrade install.
I also had to bind the AMD sata driver to the MS AHCI driver, mean right click search etc... it found the AMD Sata driver and updated it

1764597807834.webp

Copilot says it is still in AHCI mode, compared MS to AMD table
ok got it, you were close, it was like AMD/chipset-drivers etc... I right click the AHCI MS driver and directed it to the AMD extracted drivers, it found and updated, it no longer says AHCI anymore, is it still AHCI? I don't want to lose functionality

Yes, Scott — you're still running in AHCI mode, even though the label no longer says “Standard SATA AHCI Controller.” The name change simply reflects the AMD-specific driver binding, not a change in BIOS mode or disk protocol.

🧠 Why You're Still in AHCI

LayerStatusNotes
BIOS ModeAHCISet at firmware level — unchanged by driver swap
Driver BindingAMD SATA Controller (amdhc.inf)Replaces Microsoft AHCI driver
FunctionalityAHCI activeNative Command Queuing, hot-plug, TRIM still supported

The AMD driver doesn’t always label the device as “AHCI” — it may just say “AMD SATA Controller” or similar. What matters is that:
  • Your BIOS is still set to AHCI
  • Your drives weren’t reconfigured or re-imaged
  • Device Manager shows the AMD driver is active and working properly

🧠 What the AMD SATA Driver Adds (vs Microsoft AHCI)

Basic AHCI support✅ Yes✅ Yes
Native command queuing (NCQ)✅ Yes✅ Yes
Hot-plug support✅ Yes✅ Yes
RAID support❌ No✅ Yes (if RAID mode enabled)
Chipset-specific optimizations❌ No✅ Yes
Power management tuning❌ Generic✅ Tuned for SB700
Boot reliability on legacy boards⚠️ Sometimes flaky✅ More stable

🔍 When It Helps Most

  • Legacy SATA controllers (like SB700) benefit from AMD’s tuned driver for better disk I/O and fewer boot hiccups
  • RAID setups require AMD’s driver to function properly
  • Sleep/hibernate stability can improve with AMD’s power management tuning
  • Event log noise (e.g., disk timeouts or resets) may reduce with the AMD driver

I asked MS Copilot about the other AMD driver. Microsoft Copilot is very handy as a research info interactive tool, better than doing web searches.
I have also used chatgpt and I think MS Copilot is much better. I can upload images and it can see them, and it never times out on me
It is very good at chatting about other topics.

in the chat dialog box, just right click paste an image

what does the AMD usbfilter.inf driver add

The AMD usbfilter.inf driver improves USB device detection, connection stability, and power management on AMD chipsets—especially legacy ones like SB700. It acts as a low-level filter between the USB controller and Windows.

🧠 What the AMD USB Filter Driver Does

FeatureFunctionBenefit
Connection DetectionMonitors plug/unplug eventsReduces device dropouts and ghosting
Power ManagementTunes USB suspend/resume behaviorImproves sleep/hibernate reliability
Controller CompatibilityBridges quirks in SB700 USB stackEnsures full USB 2.0 support
Audio/TV Device StabilityEnhances streaming peripheralsReduces stutter and latency for USB audio/video

According to AMD and OEMs like HP and Lenovo, this driver is especially useful for:
  • USB speakers, webcams, and TV tuners
  • Legacy boards with SB700/SB710 southbridges
  • Systems prone to USB disconnects or power glitches
It’s not a full controller driver—it’s a filter layered into the USB stack to intercept and optimize communication.

🔍 How to Confirm It’s Active

  • Open Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • Look for entries like “AMD USB Filter” or check driver details for usbfilter.inf
  • You can also run driverquery /v | findstr usbfilter to confirm it's loaded

🛠️ Restoration Log Entry Suggestion

Code

Code:
[Date] 2025-12-01
[Event] AMD USB Filter Driver installed
[Driver] usbfilter.inf (Advanced Micro Devices Inc.)
[Function] Improves USB device detection, power management, and controller compatibility on SB700
[Outcome] USB stability enhanced; filter active in driver stack
Would you like help drafting a USB filter protocol card, showing install path, validation steps, and impact on device reliability? It would round out your chipset recovery log beautifully.
