Upgrading to pro issues

So I have a pro licence in my Microsoft account and I’ve been trying to upgrade the install by using the generic product key. It works and activated but then almost immediately it stops recognising my regular wifi connection (although it does still show the two guest networks). I tried this on Windows 10 first and it kept happening even after three installs. So I put 11 23H2 back on the machine - but I’m expecting the same thing to happen again. Now I can’t input a product key because there isn’t one - it’s just in my Microsoft account with no key showing.

Question:Is the pro license in your MS account assigned to THAT machine?

I don't know about your key issues. But ,Win 11 24H2 had trouble at my initial install and then once later again with WiFi. At the time, multiple other devices were still recognizing and using the router. Win 11 would even connect, but it would not have routing to the Internet (i.e. "No Internet Access"). Rebooting the router fixed that both times.

No it’s not attached to a machine as far as I’m aware. I haven’t used it for ages. It’s annoying there’s no way to directly link it with the machine you want to use it on. As far as I’m aware, it works the same way as an office or word purchase linked to your account. If you install it, it uses the one from your account - but obviously you can’t install it twice.

Google says the product key should be in the email you got when you bought it (which was back in 2018). Found the email and no product code - just the same details as in my Microsoft account - ie an order number.

There’s a bar code in the email though. Scanning that comes up with “no usable data”

I’ll try again with the generic key having logged in with my ms account first.

Also I can’t seem to uninstall one drive. Normally I uninstall it in control panel but it wasn’t there. Tried uninstall from the menu and it took me to app settings. But it’s not listed there. And it’s still installed (I think - it shows up in settings asking me to sign in).

Well it’s activated. I’ll see if the internet connection stays or disappears again (this in on 11 23H2). I was trying to install 10 previously and I swear it was having deliberate gremlins! Maybe trying to force me to put 11 on it again (spare laptop). I had no issues installing 10 on a laptop that was too old for windows 11 (unlike this one).

So it seems ok so far - still have internet. Have set group policy editor and still have internet. On Windows 10 install that’s the point when the internet disappeared - after updating to pro and setting group policy editor (I’m suspicious!).

I don’t want it upgrading to 24H2. I have my main one on 24H2 akready. The theory was to keep it on Windows 10, get the extra year esu for certain programs to keep working. But I’ve given up on that idea for now! I have an older machine in windows 10 that’ll get the esu so that’ll do.

Now I just need to get rid of one drive.

Found this on winaero

Right click start menu
Select Terminsl (Admin)
Type winget uninstall onedrive

Seems to be gone now - although it still has an icon asking me to sign in to one drive in settings.

That's the way it works if the license is RETAIL key. A retail key can be moved from machine to machine.If it's an OEM key, that's a horse of a different color.

It isn't an OEM key. Neither it is a retail key with a product code. It's a digital upgrade stored in my microsoft account

Anyway it worked fine on Windows 11 23H2 but I swear MS was trying to stop me using it on a Windows 10 install (same machine!).

As for one drive - it is still there - in the programs list. I'm sure I just used to uninstall it in control panel until recently.

I think MS eased up on that. Also, if I'm remembering correctly one can use the generic key for the Windows version to change Windows from OEM to retail.
