Upgrading to Windows 11 via an update

Is there going to be a tutorial on upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10 via an update as I have watched several YouTube videos on doing this and there seems to be no correlation between some of them and it would be good to have a tutorial on this forum on how to do this as I don't want to lose any of my apps and settings that I have et up on my current Windows 10 machine that is compatible?

It's just like a Win10 'Feature Update'. Should be exactly the same process as when Win10 1909 got upgraded to win10 2004 through Windows Update.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
Thanks Bree it is just that I don't want to lose any of the setup I have in Windows10. I have backed up to an external drive and from some of the videos I have watched there is an option to revert back to Windows 10 it is just that I rather rely on tutorials in this and the Ten Forum to guide me through the process.

I tested upgrading a copy of The W10 system from my 'main machine' to Windows 11, see my System One below.

All my installed apps and their settings, my Desktop layout and icons, and my pinned apps on the Taskbar were still there after the upgrade.

There were a few Windows settings that got reset to their defaults, none of them particularly significant. But that is something that has happened with every Windows 10 major Feature Update, so I'm well practised at setting them back the way I want them.

These included things like:
Turned on auto Defrag for all drives (I like it tuned off)
Turned back on Password Protected Sharing (I want it turned off)
Turned off details pane in File Explorer (I turn it back on again)
File copy reset to 'fewer details' (I like to see more detail, so I turn it on next time I do a copy)

Yes Bree I like things like Open Shell running in Windows 7 mode and Translucent TB making my taskbar transparent. Now I know I can always download these things again but I would prefer not to see pic for my taskbar for example. ;)

Hey John.. not sure what you are worried about, bud... we (as in @Brink et al ..(not me so much - I just try) have your back ;)

If the final release is not totally changed (which I doubt!) - we all have done upgrades with no issue.

Yes Bree I like things like Open Shell running in Windows 7 mode and Translucent TB making my taskbar transparent. Now I know I can always download these things again but I would prefer not to see pic for my taskbar for example. ;)

I'm running 11 Insider DEV and Beta on 2 of my PCs. Both were updated from Windows 10 and didn't lose any apps or app settings except T-Clock for displaying time. Open Shell stayed exactly as it was in 10 except for the start button not replacing the Windows start button. The Open Shell button is at left as usual, and I left the 11 button centered. The combination looks OK. Suggest you do a good system backup of your 10 installation before you upgrade just in case, but it's unlikely you'll need it.

In general, changes in 11 that may 'break' software are centred around things that deliberately change the behaviour of the system tray part of the Taskbar (larc919's T-Clock, for example). Just having an icon in the notification area is fine, that continues to work just as before (my CoreTemp for example).

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Yes Bree that is what I am wanting the new system to do as I do like icons on the right of my taskbar to give me for example a continuous readout of my CPU core temp.

I had been waiting over a week on Release Preview and never was offered the 11 upgrade, changed to the Beta channel and it came right up within 2 minutes. Whatever. :)

Now to decide whether or not to just stay on xxx.194...
