I get this error off and on throughout the day:

USB device not recognized.jpg

USBDview shows this:
2023-03-25 12_10_23-USBDeview.jpg

I Disable, Disconnect and Uninstall the device but it keeps coming back. I have no idea what it actually is.
I have a USB mouse and keyboard installed and they work fine so this must be one of the front or rear USB hubs.

This is on a Lenovo Ideacenter K450e Type 90B3 desktop, all latest available drivers installed, running Windows 11:

Any suggestions on how to debug this greatly appreciated.

I think the NirSoft USBDevView InstanceID field contains the Device manager HardwareID so you could match it up to the culprit in Device manager then uninstall it & allow or force hardware re-detection.

I assume your Bios is up to date, that your latest system image is recent & that your driver backup is current [Backup and Restore Device Drivers - ElevenForumTutorials].

All the best,
Denis

Great suggestion! Found this: Genesys Logic USB2.0 Card Reader USB\VID_05E3&PID_0722\000000009843 here: Lenovo K450e crashes

I'll try reinstalling the driver and see if that helps. Thanks.

Rich,

I'm only too pleased to help.

And only too pleased to nag - Backup and Restore Device Drivers - ElevenForumTutorials

I go overboard a bit with driver backups. I also save several lists of driver properties [Dism, PS, ... & NirSoft tools].
My eight lists show different sets of properties & using them in conjunction with each other saved me once when a useless OEM [Chuwi] decided to use the wrong hardware manifest in their driver downloads.
My driver backup batch file does the driver backup and creates the lists in both my Win10 & Win11 computers without any manual intervention.
If you are interested then you can see it at my driver backup and driver properties lists ditty - post #43 - TenForums
All you need to set to tailor it for your use are the two variables:-
BackupFolder
NirSoftFolder [This assumes all your NirSoft tools are laid out as mine are within a single folder group but you can tailor the individual calls to their locations as required].

Looking at the posted batch file now, I can see that I simplified it a bit.
- My own version includes putting a date stamp in the BackupFolder name so I can save fully independent driver backups each time.
- I suppose I simplified it to keep it international [my date format is 28/04/2018 so reformatting into yyyymmdd is by using %Date:~6,4%%Date:~3,2%%Date:~0,2%].
- If you are interested in using my full version then I'd have to alter it to suit your date format [so please post your response to echo %date%].
- My backup folder variable is F:\InstallFiles\%ComputerName%\InstalledDrivers so you might want to tell me what you would choose for that. I include %ComputerName% because it eases backing up drivers on different computers to a common external backup disk.

All the best,

Didn't last, problem has returned so it wasn't the device driver. Beginning to look like a possible hardware problem. I'm going to try a clean install of Windows 11 after I do the next Macrium backup to see if that makes a difference.

I'll look at your driver backup though, sounds interesting.

I have seen that pluging some USB flash drives or other USB devices may cause an unknown USB device error which affects the respective USB root or hub in Device Manager. This cannot be fixed by simply removing the USB device, you must reinstall the USB driver. This means you either install the chipset drivers or USB 3.0 drivers. You can use a utility such as Snappy Driver Installer to automatically find and install the driver for the specific device. This always fixes the issue until you plug some other USB device and does that again.

One thing that also happened to me in the past which was similar to this issue was that I had to manually remap the locations of USB ports as in assigning a port letter to each one or something like that. They had programatically become corrupt somehow and It wasnt a really easy thing to do per se. However there is a great little tutorial out there. If I find it Ill post it here.

I don't think I've tried the chipset driver. Will give that a go. Could I use the onscreen keyboard, then delete all USB?

If touch screen works through USB it should stop working once you delete the respective device.

My USB drives sometime wont open as per setting of Autoplay. I just transfer/copy all content to a folder on my desktop. I then format the USB, replace the files. Works every time.

Rich,

Does Device mgr show an exclamation mark or list any devices in a section called Other devices so that you can be certain of what the problem device is?

I had an Intel socket 775 motherboard that with the latest Intel drivers installed the USB ports would hardly see a mouse or keyboard. If I connected a USB flash drive most of the time I would get the Unknown device message. I tried 2-3 drivers, none with 100% success. The solution was to manually replace all Intel USB devices with the respective generic USB devices in Device Manager. Right-click on a USB device, select Update drivers and select the second option (manual installation). Then select the second option again (do not search, choose from database). Once you see a list of compatible drivers, select the generic one. After replacing all USB devices restart for the change to take effect.

@spapakons, I reinstalled the Intel chipset driver per your post here and have not had the error message since, that's almost 2 days.

Many thanks everyone for your suggestions and help.

Scratch that, just had the same error message a few minutes ago. This happened after I plugged my phone into the yellow usb port in the front of the Lenovo K450E to charge it (USB connector/USB power off charging connector), then removed it after a few minutes to charge it from a 5V 1amp plug instead. If this error message happens often in the next few days I'll Clean Install WIndows 11.
