Solved USB Disconnects Repeatedly!

I have an HP Spectre x360 Convertible running Win11. It's been perfectly healthy for an old machine - so no nagging issues.

The USB-A port now throws an alert beep and disconnects after about 3-4 minutes of having a device inserted. Then, it repeatedly connects and disconnects, beeping over/over.

A look in Device Manager show PCI Device under Other Devices,, with an exclamation point - not sure I've ever seen that before. So, I uninstalled it, along with the other devices listed under USB Controllers, figured that they will reinstall themselves properly with a restart. All of them did, except the PCI Device.

I then when back to the HP Drivers site and downloaded the PCI drivers, reinstalled them and restarted. No dice. I also tried changing the power suspend setting for USB and that didn't work either.

Does anyone here have any ideas about how I might fix this problem? I'd sure like to use that port again!!

Try running this batch file. You will have to unzip it first.
It is an easy and simple first step I take before considering more complicated things.
It runs SFC and DISM commands in a command window and can take some while to run. After it is complete then restart your computer.
In my case it takes from 15 to 90 minutes so be patient. One person with a slow computer and internet connection said it took 4 hours.

Thanks for your interest and fast response.
I typically run SFC and DISM every now/then, but I just ran your bat file.
All is well.

The PCI Device in Device Manager is still marked with an exclamation mark, and the USB is still unhappy.
Any other ideas to resolve are welcome!

the device with the exclamation mark in the device manager
right click this device and then click remove.

exit the device manager then restart Windows
Windows will reinstall the required drivers
then check the device manager again.

Missing PCI device drivers may be fixed by installing the chipset drivers.

As "HP Spectre x360 Convertible" doesn't define what chipset you have, it's hard to direct you to the proper drivers.

I'm not sure fixing that would fix your USB issue, though.

Thanks Steve. I did this multiple times at the beginning of my troubleshooting. Still, no fix.

sorry i missed that in your post.

check the HP site to see if you can download the drivers or updated drivers and install them.
or maybe its just wear and tear.

Unusual way of providing the info. A Web search suggests it's an HP Spectre x360 - 15t-bl000.

Maybe here:


I'd try both the chipset utility and the MEI driver.

Update....

Thanks folks for your help. I resolved this, and it's not that sexy a fix.

First, the USB flash drive causing the issue must have contacts worn down a bit, b/c if I gently push one way or another on the drive, I can get it to stop throwing alerts. These alerts don't happen on my other machines with this USB drive, as they are all much newer machines. Fix: replace the USB drive.

The missing PCI driver is simply the Realtek Card Reader. I determined this by doing some deeper research on the info in Device Manager for the missing PCI driver. I found the latest, installed and boom - fixed.
