"User file history" in Disk Cleanup list, at bottom

No idea when this list item appeared, but I don't use File History and never did. FH is pre-set to make copies of files in the so-called User folders, on the C: drive, under <username>, and I don't ever use those folders. I store all of my programs and "user" files on another drive entirely, in my own catalog system, and I make images of everything important to me almost every night, so File History copies would be superfluous bloat on my machines. I'm sure File History can be adapted to store copies of different folders' contents, but I see no point, since I'm a dependable backer-upper.

Just wondering whether there's a reg key that holds Disk Cleanup categories, or another editable list somewhere that would let me delete "User file history." (BTW, it's only in the DC list on one of my four active machines running W11 and W10, so something must have added it to a list, and that means the list can be modified somehow.)

I don't have it handy, but there is a process by which you can turn plain old Disk Cleanup into "Extended Disk Cleanup". In that process you can select just what you want Disk Cleanup to remove. The possible list is extensive.
Google "Extended Disk Cleanup" .
I've used Extended Disk Cleanup on my own PC's for years.

Thanks, TM. I think maybe that's what OAT's suggestion showed me: a DC with lots more choices. Impressive.

I'd just like to find a way to REDUCE the number of choices in the checklist. But it probably doesn't exist. Ah, well. No big deal. 🤷‍♂️

Not sure, but generally once I've cleaned an item on the list it doesn't reappear on the list unless there's something new to clean up.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Wikipedia says that the old Disk Cleanup app has been deprecated, although it is still part of Windows.

I think the current app is Storage Sense > turn it ON if it isn't ON by default. Maybe it will help in getting rid of unused File History crud.

My friend, that's what Check Lists are for....so you can select what you want and ignore the rest. Altering the list itself, would be akin to cheating, and would actually serve no purpose.
Just create an Extended Disk Cleanup, for yourself, and forget the rest. Finis!

But, when you've done all that, I can tell you, from my own 40+ years of experience, that even running DC every day, you'll still be accumulating several thousands of Temporary Internet files, like from Edge and Firefox, daily, that someday you'll have to deal with. Unless of course, you just wipe your HD and reinstall Windows, like some do. I know about that, but I could never figure out the Logic of it.

I just so much more like the idea of keeping my PC running like a Swiss Watch, instead of a Farmall Tractor. Instead of loading up with junk, and eventually dying, it just keeps getting Betterer and Betterer.
