If I made a Macrium Image of my Win 11 and all the partitions that is installed in a VMware VM could I restore it to my D: drive and make it bootable? I'm thinking about dual booting between my Win 11 Pro Beta and my Win 11 Home Dev builds. I know I can do a clean install on my D: drive but my C: drive is a Nvme drive so I can't just unplug it. I don't want to mess up my boot partition on my C: drive. I just thought of another question. Would it be activated or would I have to have it reactivated? I'm not sure I'm going to do it. I just like to know if it's possible.

I don't know if this will help, (non-VM), but I did a similar thing. It worked and both activated.
I only have one SSD (read OS) hooked up at one time.

In theory it should work as long as you copy all the partitions of the VM guest OS. But in the end you'll have to try it to be sure. If it works you can use the built in boot manager of your mainboard to switch between the two Windows versions.

If I do try to move the OS from a VM to the D: drive I would use EasyBCD to make the multi boot menu if possible. The Win 11 Dev build is running OK in a VM. I'm just considering doing this to test the Dev Build with my real hardware drivers. If this works, I may slowly move some of my paid programs over to the Dev Build and remove them from my Beta Build. One thing I do know, if this is a failure I can use a Macrium image to undo the changes.

I didn't notice this for almost a year.
Well, I probably noticed it, but never thought about what it... meant. :)

It's no different than checking the boxes on all partitions of a disk, but I never noticed it.

Image is made so now all I have to do is partition my 1 TB SSD D: drive and try it. I'm not going to try it tonight because I'm to tired and might make a few mistakes.

I'm so use to making my images I just click and go without looking at the whole program.

Same here. I only make full images, so I sort of disregard everything else. :-)

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Sure it is possible but you need to be sure that you have all the necessary host drivers available. This is particularly important when using an optane memory SSD as these may not be in standrd MS iso.

I always inject my key host drivers into the installation iso before creating VM as it is easier to dual boot in host afterwards.

The problem is if pc does not boot because it is missing a driver that is not in standard iso.

My ASUS laptop has an optane nvme drive and in optane mode, it needs a driver that is not included standard iso. I inject the optane driver into the installation iso first {along with other key drivers) before installing on a vm. That way if I clone vm to host pc, it has the driver available.

For most users this is normally not an issue but even if pc boots on host, you can find a lot of items are not working due to missing drivers e.g. touchpads, wifi.

A typical issue is that the host uses a default MS graphics driver on initial boot and you have to manually install a specific graphics driver to get full benefit.

Thus backing up all your drivers first is a good plan, as it is much easier to sort out missing driver issues from device management.

Personally, I just inject all saved 3rd party drivers into standard MS iso before installing in vm in first place, even though that is overkill.

This way, as Windows 10/11 is very good at detecting the "hardware" change, it automatically selects all the right drivers. That way I do not spend ages updating drivers in device manager afterwards, or worse need to go hunting on web for misding drivers.

As minimum, backing up 3rd party host drivers from an existing up to date installation is a really good plan before trying to clone a vm to host.

Yes -- but to restore use the macrium stand alone restore as a bootable iso from WITHIN the VM -- you can create a new VM for this purpose - just ensure it has a large enough disk space and attach the image file. You can also edit the .vmx file (vm config) in Vmware to identically have the same configuration -- and remember on ist boot of the moved VM -- say "I moved it" not "I copied it" otherwise you'll lose Windows activation.

Easier way normally instead of taking image from within the VM is just to copy via File explorer the actual VM files, and edit the vmx file manually to ensure the configuration is consistent.

If you move everything to the "D" drive via macrium (W11 etc) there shouldn't be any problem - if you do get the message on ist boot of the VM -- choose "I moved it" not "I copied it". When you boot the "D" drive it will be seen as probably the "C" drive so in theory it should be identical to the system that was originally on your "C" drive.

I find also easiest way to serach for "Missing drivers" is to have an image of your last "Working OS" -- go down the hardware devices where there's indications of missing hardware etc, use update driver and install from PC pointing the search to this file on the previous working Windows : -- windows/system32/DriverStore and check the include subdirectories box.

Cheers

I was successful in moving the Win 11 Dev build from the VM to a partition on my second SSD. I'm posting this from the Dev build. I used Brinks tutorial to backup my drivers in my in my Win 11 Beta build. I'm glad I did because I did have to restore one driver. Then I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to make a blank 250GB partition on my secondary SSD. Once I had the drive partitioned I restored the Macrium image to it by dragging the partitions to the blank partition. After that was done I used EasyBCD to make the boot entry. On my first try I got a boot error. For some reason the boot order in the BIOS got changed. I changed the order and the second try was successful. When I started the Dev build it did a few restarts and then booted. My Win 11 home Dev build is now running on it's own and it did activate.

I moved the image from within the Host OS and it worked. I just had to change the boot order in the Bios. I don't know why but the boot order got changed. When first started the OS did a few restarts then loaded. I did have to restore three drivers.
