Solved Very Minor Desktop Icon issue


I have the same problem. It is observable since the installation of update KB5022913.

Yes, can confirm this is without doubt a Windows 11 bug. Reinstalled Windows 10 last week because I was tired of of this bug and the issue was not present on Windows 10. Last night I reinstalled Windows 11 to see if MS fixed the issue with the new updates and the issue is still persisting...

If we cannot uninstall this update, all we can do is wait for Microsoft to fix it. If you uninstall it, to prevent it from reinstalling use Windows Update Show/Hide Tool (aka wushowhide.diagcab) to hide it (block it). Alternatively you can use WUA (Windows Update Advance Manager I think) or similar utilities. Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10

I have same problem since several months back. When i dont use PC icons freezes when trying to click on them nothing happens. Need either ctrl-alt del or open some program from statusbar and close then icons works. Microsoft either dont know about this issue or slow to fix it. I wonder if i should go back to Win10 because this is so disturbing

I even reinstalled Win11 1 month ago and problem comes back. Idk if its related to some update or not

Simply opening the start menu is enough to fix it for me, but this is annoying nonetheless

Update Explorer Patcher or Open Shell or any other customization utility you have.
I haven't downloaded any of those. Issue has been going on for a few months now with no solution. A fresh install of windows doesn't help either. Win10 works just fine, but win11 has this issue as soon as i install the updates.

Too much effort for what is (to me) a minor frustration occasionally

Looks like it has to do with some window size. The left side of the desktop is inside the area and affected, while the right side of the desktop is off limits and unaffected. Which application tries unsuccessfully to draw a window and makes your system freeze? Can you check the logs when this happens? Probably some third party antivirus that scans the system when idle or an application trying to update when idle...

I have very minimal software on my PC, let alone anything non-MS running in the background. No AV either,

Basically something happens after 20 mins that prevents the icons on the left side from being selected/used until another window or the start menu is brought up and minimized, after which the icons become responsive again.
They will also become responsive after roughly 5-10 seconds of hovering and moving the mouse over it, after which the selection outline will flash/lag and the icons becomes responsive again.

I have this also. My icons on the left occasionally stop responding completely.

Some background application (that fails to draw its window on screen for some reason) steals focus so you cannot use the desktop icons on the left. The icons at the right are out of the application's window area, so you can click on them and restore focus. The same is done when clicking on the taskbar, you change focus to the File Explorer application (the respective in Mac OS is Finder). What is that application, I don't know. Try disabling all startup applications and enable one-by-one to find out. If that doesn't work, try non-Microsoft services.

Some background application (that fails to draw its window on screen for some reason) steals focus so you cannot use the desktop icons on the left. The icons at the right are out of the application's window area, so you can click on them and restore focus. The same is done when clicking on the taskbar, you change focus to the File Explorer application (the respective in Mac OS is Finder). What is that application, I don't know. Try disabling all startup applications and enable one-by-one to find out. If that doesn't work, try non-Microsoft services.
I just did another fresh install of the OS and the issue is still present even when i haven't downloaded anything yet. Installed only updates and drivers.

This means that the said application or service is Microsoft's. Maybe a background installation of Windows Updates or updating of Windows Defender definitions? Uninstall latest updates, if this doesn't fix your issue, you may have to reinstall Windows 11 once more. Enable System Restore and then create a reference Restore Point before installing any updates. Use Windows Automatic Update Manager (WAU) to disable Windows Update and manually install one update at a time. If there is no issue, create a new restore point. If you find which update causes the issue, just run Windows Restore and return to the latest restore point that you had no issues. Block the problematic update. Needless to say that I would also block any driver updates and I would manually download and install any drivers from manufacturer's support site.

It has to be the Widgets that are the cause of this bug. The issue only happens on the exact area the widget window pops up. You can also un-freeze the icons by opening up and closing the widgets panel. If you could simply just move the panel to the right side of the screen and i would be fine with it. Or is there a way to do it?
