VLC still IMO greatest FREE media player and it also is a server and plays ripped DVD's too .

Hi folks
Still even more impressed with VLC as a Free media player -- haven't yet found one single codec it can't handle -- and you can stream to remote devices (i.e it's also a Server) plus available in almost any language on the planet. Working perfectly on Windows 11 latest release (insider preview).

VLC MP plays ripped DVDs. It does not rip DVDs, I believe.
You can use MakeMKV to rip your personal DVD collection. It's free software.

To Play --- On Linux --perfectly legal simply use VLC on Linux (same GUI as on Windows) and install (also legal program) libdvdcss -- note for std commercial DVD's--I don't know anything about Blu Ray DVD's though/

To Rip : On Windows -- perfectly legal software but not in all jurisdictions - and you'll have to go for an archive of AnyDVD or its successor since the site (redfox.bz) who formerly supplied the AnyDVD and successor DVD ripping program has since around June either closed down or is "temporarily out of business" .

DVDFAB seems to still be functioning though.

Not to the point of Jims thread, but many music distributors disallow replicating or digitising even your owned DVD/CD’s.

I believe that this varies between countries. I recall reading something that stated that it is illegal in the UK, I can’t remember what the go is in America. I also believe the Australian Gov said “Rubbish” to the notion of not being able to digitise your own collections.

I am trying to recall from a very long time ago. Hence my using the media format, CD’s lol

Digitising:

Australia - Yes.
UK changed laws, now - Yes.
USA - Unknown.
Across Europe - Varies.

I have never read of anyone being prosecuted for digitising their own collections.
I have read of prosecutions for Bootleg/DRM protected music being sold at markets

You can digitize anything you own. Just can’t redistribute it. That’s what will get you in trouble.

@jimbo45 should also install the DLL mod for VLC to play/pause on mouse click. Works for single touch on surfaces, etc. Just adds another convenience to the many it already has.

Anyone know of a black theme for it? Found one but it was trash…

Only up until whenever (last decade?) The RIAA disagreed with you. They went as far as trying to prosecute a Man for keeping 2000 copies of music (MP3’s) he had purchased and digitised to his PC, declaring them "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings. How they found out I have no idea.
In the UK, the high court overturned a decision made by the Govt. that said people could legally make 1 copy of music they own for their own use. I believe it has since been made legal again.
Australia on the other hand I believe flipped the music industry the bird and said fair game to digitising your music.

As you say, the legality of use of anydvd varies from country to country.

The UK introduced a fair backup clause into law a few years back whereby if you used such tools it was ok to make personal backups of protected DVDs.

The wimpish government of the day got pressurised by the main DVD producers and Digital Rights brigade and reversed the law change within weeks.

So strictly it is illegal in UK to rip protected DVDs at all.

Even copying DVD in real time for personal use is technically illegal in UK but the UK government only pays lip service to stop real time copying as it is really too inefficient for "commercial' pirates to use real time copying of DVDs.

Of course, whether average Brit Joe Public cares about the law is a different matter LOL.

Haven't used VLC in quite a while, I always experienced bugs in it!
Still using MPC-BE. Does everything VLC does. Nice themes.
Play/Pause is controlled by Logi mouse.

I ditched VLC player 14 ½ years ago. Playing 4K HDR content with VLC is known to add noticeable choppiness/stutter if using an affordable/cheap HTPC (or laptop) the purpose of which is hearing no background noise of the cooling fan(s) while watching a movie in high quality so, MPC-HC with madVR typically gives the best results or else the quality is the same, but it still helps to reduce the power consumption with almost no exceptions at least for those who know how to set it up right, albeit this isn't exactly rocket science either.

VLC still IMO greatest FREE media player and it also is a server and plays ripped DVD's too .
