Solved W10 to W11 Upgrade Path Questions

I'm going to be moving on up to Windows 11 soon. My PC meets all criteria. I have some basic questions regarding the various upgrade paths.

I have the option to upgrade from Windows Update.
  • Is upgrading from WU the same procedure (step by step process) that you would be doing if you upgraded using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from the Media Creation Tool page?
  • Is it better, safer, faster, to upgrade using the installation media USB method instead?
  • Is the ISO method any different than the USB method (as far as step by step process goes)?
Any other tips or pointers are appreciated!

If you have been offered the upgrade through Windows Update then that means Windows has already checked for compatibility and there are no known issues for your particular hardware and software. MS believe you should have a trouble-free upgrade.

ISO or USB, makes no difference, they contain the same files. You start the in-place upgrade from within your existing Windows by running the Setup.exe you'll find on the USB or mounted ISO. From then on the steps are the same.

It is always faster to do an in-place upgrade than to use Windows Update. I documented the experience of using Windows Update here:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.

When i updated to W11 i had waited for the invite from MS to upgraed ! All was smooth & MS took care of everything ! Glad i waited compared to some problems i seen on the boards ! JMO

Actually, as a very long-time member of tenforums and elevenforum, the vast majority of problems happen with people who wait for the upgrade to happen via Windows Update. Upgrading from an ISO file downloaded directly from Microsoft has historically proven to be faster and more reliable than Windows Update.

The in-place upgrade is the path for me!
