Hi,

Why has the size increased ever since I upgraded to Pro.

I intend to transfer Documents, Pics, Vids, Music and Downloads to the Data drive, simply W11 on C.

Have 16 gigs of memory of which max 8 is utilized. I fail to understand how people can run W11 Pro on 8.....I am planning to upgrade to 32.... 70 back ground and approx. 100 Windows processes running. On startup without any app, 4.5 gigs are used.....:(

Hoping to hear your expert opinion.

It looks like you still have the Windows.old folder on the C: drive.

Look at the C: drive in File Explorer, where the RED arrow points...

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Windows 10/11 adapt their usage to how much RAM is available - it will run in 4GB. I have run it in 1 GB albeit very slowly.

I have 16GB and checking recently I use about 3.5 GB idling When I run it on an older 8GB device, it uses 2.1 GB.

So it adapts itself automatically.

Windows will manage memory and will use whatever you install. The days of users worrying about every MB of memory are gone.
More memory is needed if you are a gamer or a heavy multitasker. For example, 20+ tabs open in a browser all the time.
Most basic users can get by on that 8 gigs of memory. Web surfing, email and streaming Netflix, and the like.

You need to go to Options and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files".
And put a dot in: "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

You might have to also UNcheck: "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then you should be able to see the Windows.old folder

Your 22.5GB is seriously bloated for a Windows 11 Pro install. Mine is only 15.3GB. Expand the Windows tree to see what's using up the space. My guess is that your WinSxS is seriously overdue for a clean up.

From 4GB up to about 8GB memory management typically uses a little more than half the installed RAM at idle. With 16GB or 32GB installed little more will be used, at least not until apps start asking for RAM, that is where having more RAM pays dividends. My machine above has just 4GB RAM and runs fine, just 2.4GB is in use at idle.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. So here seen in the attachments', should delete Windows folder in explorer?

Your WinSxS looks a little on the large side, your System32 more so. Many system files appear to be listed twice, both in WinSxS and System32 by a mechanism called a hardlink. This makes one physical copy of a file appear (and be counted towards total space used) in two or more places.

Analysing the component store as described in the tutorial I gave a link for makes no changes, but will tell you if the are any reclaimable packages. Running Option Three (StartComponentCleanup) will reclaim the space, in fact it often reclaims some space even if analysis said there were no reclaimable packages. I routinely clean up my WinSxS after each cumulative update.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
